Summary
They’d stuck it out together even after they both got shipped out of Brooklyn and off to the war, where somehow being gay was just as taboo even off of American soil. Bucky supposed it had made sense in a way. It’s hard not to care about stateside law when your lover is Captain America.
Not that Steve is Captain America anymore, though he is still Bucky Barnes’ lover- and as of two months ago, legally he’s even more. Because while they are back in Brooklyn again, it’s been a long time since the war, and while this isn’t where Bucky thought they’d end up by a longshot, he can’t help but thank his lucky stars that they no longer have to worry about being caught.
(alternatively: steve and bucky get some of those stupid corporate pride packages.)

The tone in Bucky’s voice makes Steve open his bleary eyes, and he smiles up into a face he knows far better than his own and grins. “I feel grounded. Whole. Home.”
The returning grin makes his heart soar, and Bucky leans forward to kiss him, the fresh mint on his tongue means he’s already brushed his teeth, and Steve knows he spaced out after his orgasm to have missed Bucky leaving the bed.
“Love you,” he whispers as Bucky moves back to snuggle down next to him, to pull Steve in tight, curling around his back—just the way Steve likes to be held.
“‘Til the end of the line, right?”
“And beyond,” Steve replies softly and starts to fall into a safe, deep sleep, wrapped up in Bucky’s arms, warm and content, knowing that no matter what happens next—even an alien war, Thanos, whatever—nothing could keep them apart.

Steve, it's not your fault, Sam had tried to say, before Steve cut him off, and Steve doesn't think that's untrue so much as it's irrelevant; fault's got nothing to do with it. It's just—wrong. It's wrong. Steve couldn't wrap his head around it the first time, how wrong it was. Steve should have gone first. Was supposed to. Bucky could have carried on without Steve, he knows, but Steve without Bucky is a zero sum. There should never be a world that Steve is in and Bucky isn't.

Bucky just laughs and shoves another bite of egg in his mouth, giving Steve a shrug and a full-cheeked smile. He's so damn cute Steve wants to shout at him, but he can't seem to say any of the right things. "Shoulda got you a comb for Christmas," is what he comes up with instead.
"What did you get me?"
It's Steve's turn to shrug now, and if he looks more terrified than cheeky as he does so, he can only hope Bucky doesn't catch it before Steve hurries out the door.
