Izuku, Katsuki thinks, as he marches up the shitty, concrete steps to Izuku’s shitty, concrete apartment, is a shitty ass liar. It’s always: I’m fine, Kacchan, and, Don’t worry about me, Kacchan, and I definitely didn’t order DoorDash at four in the morning for the third time this month, Kacchan. How did you even–? Oh, dammit, I thought I changed my default address back to my place after Christmas break, that’s why I never got my—! Anyway! It’s not a big deal, I just— Etc., etc., ad fucking infinitum.
One day, Katsuki is going to kick open Izuku’s door only to find him dead on the floor, buried under a pile of half-finished lesson plans, and pro bono consulting cases, and insurance claims he’s somehow jacked from Katsuki’s laptop. At least, god help him, he doesn’t have to worry about Izuku getting ripped in half anymore. Or turning his bones into confetti. Or— Little blessings. At this point, Katsuki will take what he can goddamn get.

Izuku isn't too good at caring for himself. Katsuki does his best to compensate.

“Wait,” Mitsuki grabs her son's warm hands, gripping them tightly. As if he let go, he’d run out that door and do something impulsive that would land him on the national news, hero gossip magazines and on every internet forum. “Do—Did you like Izuku?”
Or, Katsuki visits to his childhood home after Izuku walks away to Ochako. He plans on sitting on the couch, contemplating what went wrong between them. Until a photo album filled with stupid memories and a mother who cares helps him unpack his feelings.

After his kidnapping, Izuku struggles. He’s meek and quiet, violent, nothing as he was.
The mumbling Katsuki always complained about, becomes something he begs for. In rough, scarred hands he holds Izuku’s face and tries very hard to be gentle.
There’s a dread that nibbles at his gut.
Izuku has lost something, clearly. Katsuki thinks that maybe, just maybe, if he can get in close enough he can slot back in the missing piece.

Katsuki clutches the award in his hands, and stares out amongst the mass of eyes watching him. They want one thing, and it’s reassurance.
Katsuki is not their man.
“There’s a lot I’m already doing. I don’t need to say it, and I don’t need to wait to be higher in the ranks.” Katsuki answers, strong. This is not his intended answer, and his PR team is going to give him the ass-whooping of his life once he steps off stage. He clears his throat, and promises:
“I’m reopening the search for Japan’s saviour, Deku. Join me or don’t, I don’t care, but I’m bringing him home.”
With that, he turns and walks away. There’s a rumbling roar of the crowd that follows him.
