She wished for Aveline, who could pick her up like a sack of potatoes and carry her home as easy as anything. "We have that in common." She gives him a small, tender smile and his chest compresses painfully. But then her expression falters, a film falling over her eyes. "It must be difficult, having so many who depend on you. Knowing their lives are in your hands."
"It is," he says. "But everyone here knows the risks. They would not be here if they didn't believe in our cause."
"I know that." Her hand is still in both of his. His fingers curl loosely around her wrist. Her pulse flutters. "But I hate the idea that people could -- will -- die because of me. For me." Her voice cracks. "Especially people I care about."
"Some things are worth dying for," he says, staring up at the fractured sky.
