Jensen learns not to touch Cougar's hat the hard way. He can't quite figure out what's so special about it, but Jensen decides to keep his distance — it's not like Cougar seems to want him there anyway. Fact is, Cougar might even hate him.
It takes a long while for Jensen to realize how wrong he is, and he doesn't mind it one bit when he finally does.

Summary
Cougar is a difficult man to break, but everyone has their limit. His is reached when he's forced to watch Jensen die over and over again, helpless to stop it. Cougar doesn't know how or why the same Friday keeps repeating, but he knows that if he doesn't stop it somehow, Jensen will keep dying.
The question is if Cougar can fix it, and just how willing he is to face his own failings in order to do so.

Summary
Cougar has come to terms with the fact that his life will probably end badly. Odds are he'll get killed during one of their increasingly desperate attempts to stop Max or, even worse, he'll waste away after having watched his team get killed during one of their increasingly desperate attempts to stop Max. Either way, he knows it will be bad.
Truth be told, he's tired of the whole thing — tired of seeking revenge and trying to reclaim his life while, ironically, throwing away the life he does have. If Cougar had a choice, he'd call it quits and settle down somewhere far, far away from Max and his evil schemes, but he knows he can't — not if it would mean leaving Jensen behind. Fact is, Jensen plays a very big part in Cougar's happily ever after. Not that Jensen knows that — and hopefully never will — because Cougar has no idea how to explain to his best friend that he doesn't mean that in a platonic capacity.
In short: Cougar knows he's not going to get the happy ending he wants, but it doesn't hurt to dream, does it?

Summary
Cougar isn't the least bit impressed by their temporary tech guy. Jensen is irresponsible, loud, and downright obnoxious, and Cougar dislikes him from the start. He knows it's harsh, but the military isn't a playground — and Jacob Jensen clearly doesn't belong.
But even before their mission is over Cougar realizes that first impressions are not to be trusted. And there is a lot more to Jensen than meets the eye.

Summary
Jensen tries to swallow, but his mouth’s gone dry as brittle old bones. Should he make contact? Would Cougar even recognize him, nine years older, with the full beard he’s grown on his trip and tired eyes?
In the end, Cougar answers the question for him. Jake watches, transfixed, as he takes a long sip of his beer and swallows, adam’s apple bobbing in some inexplicably pornographic way. He spends a moment staring contemplatively at the table before appearing to reach a decision.
And he gets up, looks straight at Jake, and walks toward him.
