"Nightmare?" TK asked softly, and Carlos nodded, "wanna talk about it?"
"You were dead," he said, voice strangled as he tried to hold back tears, "you were dead, TK."Or, three times TK comforted Carlos when he needed it.

TK's head snapped up at the sound of his boyfriend's voice, and his grip on the saline bag in his hand slackened. "Oh, god," he whispered in horror as he saw the man whose daughter had just been transported to the hospital, waving a gun around as he swayed dangerously.
Carlos, standing in his way, had his own gun pointed at the man.

"TK Strand."
Carlos felt suddenly cold all over. Strand- "you're Chief Owen Strand's kid?" Carlos asked, tense and watching the other man closely. Cops were the worst gossips, or the best, depending on one's definition, so Carlos had unwillingly heard about the new guy quite a bit.
Strand pursed his lips, jaw tightening, and swallowed. He seemed to recover fast enough though, and merely nodded. "Will that be a problem?" He asked, and it seemed like a challenge.
That Carlos was saddled with the pretty boy rich kid, who probably only got this far because of his dad's connections? Yeah, that was a problem.
"No," he smiled, painfully fake, "no problem at all."

TK had to censor his words, had to think everything through more than once before he said it, and he had lost count of the number of times he'd jumped in before one of his teammates or his dad said something that implied he and Carlos were anything more than friends.
It was exhausting.

Over time, TK gets used to Carlos showing up at the firehouse unannounced. Sometimes it’s to surprise him with lunch or to bring over whatever TK accidentally left at the condo that morning. Sometimes Carlos likes to stop by on his way in for a shift, gun strapped to his hip and a badge on his chest, just because he knows TK worries and being able to see him just one more time before Carlos heads into work makes the day easier. Sometimes Carlos walks into the firehouse with a slower pace than normal, hunched shoulders, and a frown marring his face. Ever the poised police officer, Carlos hides it well. But TK learned how to read Carlos pretty early on, can decipher his good moods from his bad. When Carlos walks into the 126 looking like that, it’s a sure sign that something is wrong with Carlos.

Four times Carlos shows up at the firehouse looking for comfort and reassurance from TK, and one time TK shows up at the police station for the same reason.
