The oil from that child's tree had tasted sweet, like honey and despair.

'Banana nut duck bread,' some flicker of memory had suggested. That would go well with honey. Would go well with despair. There had been something so familiar about the way the Edelwood had crept up over the small, frail body once the child had given up hope.

You take the marble out. The goldfish is dead and you have to shred its skin off to get to it. You have scales stuck beneath your fingernails, hard and slimy. And when you’ve got the marble in your hand, you wipe it off on your shirt and turn it over, holding it up in the red light of the sun.

There’s a number on the marble. What number is it?

Before he fully recognizes what he’s doing, shaking fingers are deftly unbuttoning Blake’s jacket. Schofield has adopted a permanent tremor ever since his first battle, ever since the first shot rang out.

“What’re you doing?” Blake asks, though it’s far away and unconcerned.

“The medic is busy. You need to take care of this now. It’s a bad place to be infected.” Schofield leaves out the obvious: you can’t amputate a torso. “Sit up straight. I’ll do it.”

That not only was it Ferris who asked her out -- despite the rumor that he was so sought after he'd never had to ask for a date in his life -- he had to ask three times. That after the second time she told Cameron: they were waiting for Ferris to talk the ticket attendant into selling him three R-rated movie tickets, because what did it matter if you were underage when Nightmare on Elm Street was showing. That Cameron was quiet for so long she had to say his name, and then he said, "Yep. Yep, yep yep," like he was talking to himself, and wouldn't talk about it anymore.

Sasha thinks it's utter nonsense but it makes him smile anyway, even if he's half convinced it's a ploy to get one of them out of the house so that Tom can talk to his handlers back in London. Still, he's long since decided he doesn't really care if that's the case; if he cared, he supposes he'd've killed him.

Subsumed isn’t the word, because there’s no doubt in Daphne or Jerry’s mind that they are the same person; it’s more that Daphne is comfortably cocooned while Jerry emerges, and vice versa. The real complication is the days when both of them are out of the cocoon, each vying for nectar and flight, wondering how to share the sunlight.
