Summary
In another universe, two brothers simply rolled down a hill and landed in the Unknown relatively safe, met a bluebird who needs to be turned back into a human, a strange Woodsman, and fought the Beast, safely returning home.
However, this is not that story. In this story, the two brothers don't just simply take a tumble and walk into the Unknown, they fall off a cliff and land in a river in an attempt to dodge an oncoming train, crashing rather violently into the Unknown. They are unconscious from their fall when found by the Beast, who choses one to keep alive and train them as his heir.

But it's not the end of the world, either, if it can be flexible and smart about the long con.The Woodsman and his daughter are trying to find their lives again after years separated. There's love, there's nostalgia, there's miscommunications, there's missing pieces; there's everything that could be expected of their situation. It would just be a lot more comfortable if they didn't feel like they were being watched and judged by a shadow peanut gallery the whole time. (It would be even better if they didn't have to know there was, in fact, a peanut gallery in the shadows that they both have every right to wish was dead.)

On a dark and stormy night, Simon Petrikov, Stanford Pines, and the Woodsman gathered to banish the evil which had wrought their hands, believing the fragments of power within them to be of some use in defeating their cosmic puppeteers. With these fragments, they cast the Pane: the final piece in the shield they had crafted to combat the entropic madness of their respective demons. This shield took the form of a clock, and has been ticking ever since, seemingly keeping the world in order… as it drives them to madness.
Simon prays for the day that someone will shatter the Pendulum Pane—allowing him and the others to move on at last. The answer comes in the form of three kids, who enter his castle in search of the Crown which had corrupted him in life, and let him save the world once before. Simon recognizes the fragments of evil within them, and wonders if there’s a way he may yet craft a new shield… while sparing their souls.
