Everyone else walks casually up to the casino. Spencer doesn’t get out of the car. Hotch holds the door open for him, arching a brow when Spencer remains still like a statue. “Are you feeling alright?”
“I can’t go in there,” Spencer blurts out.
Hotch says nothing. He’s waiting for elaboration, Spencer guesses. Right. What kind of unit chief—even a temporary one—would he be if he took that without questioning it? Yes, Spencer, of course, you can sit in the car while we gather critical information from potential witnesses. No, I don’t need to ask any questions. You can just sit in here and colour like the child you still are deep down.
Spencer looks at the pristine floor of the SUV and swallows down the nausea. He has to be an adult about this, even if it means his career and life will end under neon lights. “I’m…um. I’m banned?”
or: Spencer had to take some risks to get his mother the care she needed. He thought nobody would ever find out.

Gethin snorts and shakes his head. "Well, back then that seemed like paradise. And sometimes it is. But I could do with a little less homophobic graffiti and loneliness."
"Loneliness," Jonathan repeats, incredulously. "You can't be serious. Every gay organization in London is having their meetings in your backroom."
Gethin pulls up his shoulders. He suddenly feels like he's said too much. "You can be lonely in a room full of people," he says defensively.
Jonathan looks at him for a long moment, then he nods. "Of course you can," he simply says, and pours them more wine.

“I’m not a rat,” she said indignantly.
The disheveled ponytail, dirt stained clothes, bare feet, and the way she presently occupied the ground were doing a lot to counter her statement. But he knew a kid missing context when he saw one.
“They’re using you to run experiments to test their theories. They used to do that shit to rats Before,” he said.
Her expression twitched with what was surely the question of why but she shook her head dismissively and instead said, “I’m the only immune person they’ve found. They need to study me.”
“So,” he said with repeated emphasis. “You’re their lab rat.”
