Lan Wangji sees a blob of dark brown pop up from the folds of his neatly arranged outer robes. And then he's met with a pair of silver grey doe eyes that blink blearily.
"Wei Ying," Lan Wangji says, relief flooding through his being. He holds out a palm for Wei Ying to climb into. Wei Ying comes out, rubbing his eyes as he walks into Lan Wangji's palm. His feathers twitch cutely as Lan Wangji gently caresses his head.
"I missed Lan Zhan…you were away for so long. How could you neglect your pregnant wife like this?"
"Mn, I was wrong. I shall repent," Lan Wangji says, amused. It's hardly noon yet, and he knows Wei Ying must not have been awake for too long. But Lan Wangji isn't complaining. He doesn't mind Wei Ying being needy at all. In fact, he craves needy Wei Ying because he's the softest version of himself then.

“Were you?” Zizhen pressed.
“... I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?! You can’t remember if you went to elementary school or stayed home?”
“My memory is bad!” Mr. Mo insisted.
“You have an eidetic memory!”
Mr. Mo scratched his nose shyly. “Eidetic… photographic… something like that.”
“So then what did your classroom look like?!” Zizhen asked.
Mr. Mo smacked the whiteboard with his expo marker, forcing the students to refocus on the notes he had written. “Hydrogen bonding,” he said pointedly. “A dipole-dipole attraction. If you’re not about to tell me which three elements hydrogen can bond to in this manner, then your hand should not be raised.”

"Ah, the big, bad wolf is stealing me away! Woe is me!" Wei Ying yelps, squirming in Lan Zhan's arms and putting on an act. But the second Lan Zhan walks past their bedroom and goes toward their kitchen, Wei Ying whines. "Lan Zhan!"
"The big, bad wolf wants you to feed yourself and the pup inside," Lan Zhan says, playing along with his silly act. He pokes Wei Ying's bump gently once he sets Wei Ying down and makes him sit on the chair.
"Lan Zhaaaaaaan!"

“I eat!” Wei Wuxian protests. “You watch me eat, Lan Zhan!” Why is he protesting? He knows exactly what he’s been fucking up, and Lan Zhan almost certainly has the shape of it if not the details. The words stick in his throat, fishbones to choke on, and he drinks more soup in a sullen attempt at washing them away.
“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan says, setting a hand on his too-wiry thigh. There’s a whole sentence in the name now, layers of meaning, and he says some of it out loud with, “What’s wrong?”
The fight goes out of Wei Wuxian. It’s finally easy to surrender: Lan Zhan knows. It’s humiliating, but he knows. “Ah, Lan Zhan,” he says quietly. “It’s… complicated.”
Lan Zhan nods, his hand petting over Wei Wuxian’s leg in comforting arcs. “Then we can work together to fix it,” he says earnestly. “Tell me?”

“I have like, so many bees outside my front door right now,” he says, mouth running out ahead of him before he can even begin to think about reining it in. “It’s like a sandstorm of bees out there. There are so many bees. I got out of my car and there were just bees and I don’t want these bees. Do you want these bees? Please tell me you will come get these bees. I can’t leave my house and I have enough food for maybe a week but then I’m gonna have to learn how to cook dry beans and no one wants that, especially not me.” Wei Ying runs out of air, takes a breath, and belatedly adds, “My name is Wei Ying. Hi.”
