“It’s a foundational part of society,” Rio argued. “The social contract. If I want other people to care what I think, I need to care what they think.”
Agatha held up her hands defensively. “Okay, Archimedes.” And then she twirled her finger in a circle to showcase the bar. “Look around you. Plenty of ladies here like locking lips with other ladies. Go up and ask one of them. Don’t pussyfoot or give them your life backstory. Just do it.”
In a moment that Agatha was sure took some bravery, Rio stared her in the eye and asked, “Can I kiss you?”

Sitting 20 feet away from her behind a large mahogany desk was Agatha Harkness. Rio’s first thought was that her photo on Calhart’s website did not do the woman justice; she was far more intimidating in person than in the photo—and more beautiful. Their eyes met in an instant, and Rio watched as Agatha brushed back a strand of her brunette hair to take in her visitor, the rest pulled back into a professional updo that matched her photo. The woman’s lips were pursed, staring back at Rio with some of the bluest eyes she had ever seen. Eyes that quickly transformed from curious to stern amidst the prolonged silence. “Do you plan on standing there all day?”
Rio stiffened slightly, the woman’s harsh question catching her off guard. “What?”
“‘What?’” Agatha mocked. “Do you expect me to repeat myself? Either take a seat or leave; I will not have you wasting my time.”

“She’s with me,” a sharp voice says, and- oh. Agatha Harkness exits the rightmost elevator. She’s dressed in tailored black slacks and a blousy white top, dark hair loose over her shoulders, falling in waves that are unfortunately just the right size and shape for Rio to reach up and tug. Her heels clack against the marble tile floor.
“Hi, Agatha.”
“Rio Vidal.” Agatha gives Rio a onceover – no less thorough or scrutinizing than her flashy doorman – and turns away quickly. “Hi, Clint. She’s the one I mentioned before. Do you have her key ready?”

Rio’s reaction was immediate and visceral. She scrambled from her chair and perched on the opposite side of the bed, cupping his cheek with a shaking hand. “Oh, mijo…” her voice cracked, grief lacing through every syllable. She looked up at Agatha with wet, desperate eyes that said help me- help him- please.
Agatha swallowed hard. Her throat felt thick, blocked, like her body might refuse to let words out altogether. “I know, my love,” she managed, steady only by force of habit. “We want you to go home too.”
The door clicked open before she could say another word.
Dr. Belova entered quietly, not her usual bustling stride, not the calm-but-efficient gait she’d perfected after years in oncology. Today she walked like someone carrying an invisible weight. Like someone who dreaded every footstep closer to the bed.

Background: Agatha could never forgive Rio for taking her child.
…But what if she did? What would that take, and what would it look like? Is it even possible and, if not, is there another way forward for them?
Plot: So basically, after Agatha died Death went “fuck this shit I’m out.” That turns out to be pretty bad for humanity in general, so a lot of people have to get real invested in their relationship super quickly. The timeline toggles back and forth between the present day, specifically the weeks right after the end of AAAS1, and flashbacks that take place mostly between 1683 and 1756. This is canon-compliant. Despite the presence of Daisy, Jemma, and May, you do not need to be familiar with AoS to understand this story and the relationships in it.
Edited for Chapter 2: Lots and lots of words of Agatha and Rio falling in love, sometimes grumpily and with a little bit of murder, but also with a lot of wanting each other.
