Summary
When she had dared to imagine her first time with a man back at home in Mawano (usually in whispered, laughing conversations with Inari as they paged through the scandalous art in an erotic book they’d purchased furtively from an older cousin or handmaid) she had pictured a marriage bed with soft silken bedding, gentle words spoken in her native tongue, and the certainty that she was doing her duty for her family. The prospect of giving over her virginity, here in this shabby barn-- to a foreigner with no wealth, land, or prospects-- to a man who she could only speak to in a language which was neither of their native tongue— it was the final possible dishonor she could bring on herself and her family. ‘Rolling in the straw like a common slut’ she could remember her mother saying derisively about a maid she had dismissed for that transgression. The thought of that scorn turned on her brought a hot flush rising into Kamiko’s cheeks against her will, and she clenched her back teeth and swallowed hard against the feeling.
She jumped as Jean Baptiste’s calloused hand lightly touched her shoulder.

Summary
The mountain's been cleansed, but there was damage done by the curse that cannot be so easily undone, even though the malevolent presence is banished back to whatever cancerous source birthed it. The necromantic magic that raised up the hordes of undead has left the veil between this life and the next tattered and thin, and certain magic may be possible there that would require much greater power to perform anywhere else.
At least, that's what Darby tells Kayden over a shared bottle of Southern Comfort passed back and forth between them in the alley behind the video store after Kayden's shift, almost half a year exactly since their second disastrous trip to the mountain.
