He sat with a huff, back against the concrete walls of this stupid abandoned building, squeezing his eyes shut as the backs of his hands began to throb, blood streaking down tanned skin and staining the asphalt. He really wished he hadn’t taken this mission solo—Megumi had even offered to come—but his stubbornness had pushed through, denying him the reassurance of having a beautiful, strong, far more experienced sorcerer accompany him.
Megumi… Itadori thought aimlessly, inhaling the crisp early morning air and exhaling in one soft puff. I miss him.

Summary
It’s pathetic, downright humiliating even, how he didn't know of Itadori’s existence one day, and a few months later, Megumi is fighting for his life over who knows what. This is the kind of thing that usually doesn't bother him—not that he would know, with the overwhelming lack of romantic attraction he has felt in his life. He could point at an attractive person and admit as much, but Megumi never found himself wanting someone so much to the point where it made him want to put his head through the nearest patch of drywall.
Well, not until an idiot with pink hair ate a finger to save him.
It’s half the reason he is losing his mind right now because Megumi is not the jealous type. With nothing but a trail of losses in his rearview, Megumi has taught himself to not be possessive and needy—he wasn't a child. And now, he feels his skin crawling at the sight of Itadori’s smile directed at someone else.

It was something of a twisted punishment—for all his gloating about never needing anything in his life, the sheer want that curled through his bones nearly knocked Megumi to the ground. He had a mission to carry through, and Megumi went through the motions of chasing down the dark energy condensed into the finger, all while feeling like he had to learn how to breathe all over again.
Itadori Yuuji uprooted his life in ways Megumi will never understand.

She angrily mouthed what the hell do you think you’re doing you motherfucking slacker I can’t believe you’re holding up the line to giggle and lie out of your ass please tell me that’s your professor or something that you’re mooching for a good grade because this cannot possibly be worth Getou’s passive-aggressive wrath, but it was apparently mouthed too quickly for Yuuji to understand, because he only blinked blankly at her.
“Stop yapping,” she stage-whispered. She was fully aware that there wasn’t a line being held up by this customer, but she did not care. She refused for Yuuji to find happiness before she did.

It’s pretty fucking cold. The grass beyond Itadori’s body is a dull green stained a murky red with congealed blood. It all looks awful, like a dreadful painting meant to evoke nothing but nausea. Nothing goes together — everything is thrown into the frame without a forethought.
Megumi suffers through the displeasure of having no other choice but to view and contextualise every stroke.
Itadori’s dead. That’s the context. Itadori is dead and Megumi finds that he doesn’t quite appreciate the silence left in the wake of his departure.

Suddenly, it overtakes him, the urge to see Itadori. The urge to really see him, to look into Itadori's eyes and know exactly what he was thinking, because he wore his heart on his sleeve and his soul in his eyes.
And so, turning his hand ever so slightly, he lays two fingers across the vein on Itadori's wrist, feeling the steady drumming of life. He matches his breaths to the beating of his heart, one inhale for every two beats, one exhale for the second pair. It calms him slightly, just enough to take away the barely noticeable hunch of his shoulders.
For the first time, Megumi regrets being a sorcerer. Because how ironic is it that he indirectly cursed the person he so desperately wants to save?
