Summary
Mel King was a creature of habit.
There was a specific sort of choreography to her life beyond the chaos of the Emergency Department. A carefully controlled routine, a color-coded calendar, a rigid set of rituals that kept her grounded enough to keep showing up day after day, to keep on doing the work that was required of her to save lives.
Everything was going fine for Mel. Her personal life was predictable, unexciting, and perfectly fulfilling, thank you very much.
Enter Frank Langdon, agent of chaos.

“—and I know that there’s Becca and Tanner and Millie to consider, but I was wondering if you maybe wanted to move in? Together? With me?”
Mel blinks. He certainly doesn’t look like he’s having a stroke.
“Frank, why would we move in together?”
“I thought it might be nice,” he shrugs here, acting nonchalant even though Mel can see the tension in his jaw. “To take that next step in our relationship.”
“Frank, what are you talking about? We’re not in a relationship?”
At this, Frank’s frown deepens before widening into a frustrated half smile. “Uh, yes we are? We’ve been dating for nine months?”
What.
Or, Frank thinks Mel doesn’t do physical touch.

Summary
All of Mel's boyfriends.
Mel would never presume that Frank Langdon is boyfriend material.
Those were the words Princess had used once—though in a very different tone, after she’d stared a little too long at the new radiologist who’d come down for a consult.
“What about me?” Frank had said, winking at her like a dog begging for a treat.
It had made Mel feel inexplicably sad.
Set some time after season two.

Summary
They had told him in no uncertain terms: “Frank, you will lash out at the person closest to you, because you are sick.” But he is Mr. Self-Control, Mr. Self-Isolation; surely, with just a sheer act of will, he could simply—choose not to lash out. Stupid rabbit.
He’s finally hopped himself into a corner.

"Try here," he directs. Her hand caresses his nape before her fingers find his carotid. She bites her lip.
"Hey," she murmurs. "You're a bit tachy, yourself. But you haven't had very much." She motions to his deserted beer.
His eyes drop to her lips and he swallows. "Probably something else, then. Maybe you need a new differential diagnosis."
Her face heats and a strange warmth pools in her gut. This is dangerous. She needs to move back. She can stop things before they get weird. Before she makes them weird. She removes her hand from his neck. Her fingers tip toe their way up Frank's tie and hesitantly land on his chin. She traces her pinky along his lower lip. She tracks its movement, catching the bob of his Adam's apple in her periphery.

“What are your plans?”
He looked away for a second, out toward the street, one shoulder lifting in a shrug.
“Nothing exciting,” He looked away toward the city skyline beyond the bay doors. "I'll probably just head home."
Mel hesitated.
"Well," she said, trying to sound casual, "if you're not up to anything... you should come."
Frank looked back at her. "To karaoke?"
"Yeah,” she said. “Could be fun."
He held her gaze for a second too long.
"Yeah," he said quietly. "Maybe."

“It would be handy just to skip all the nonsense,” she says without thinking, looking back down at her laptop.
Langdon leans forward a little. “Skip the nonsense, how?”
Mel can feel herself getting warm, her cheeks flushing. “I think you know how,” she says evasively. They all think she’s some sheltered virgin here, like she hasn’t lived a life outside these ED walls. “Friends with benefits isn’t that uncommon.”

Summary
It’s fucking crazy of her. She stands there with hay stuck to the knees of her scrub pants, her mouth drawn into a thin line, and her eyes two icy shards of fury in her face. She looks like an avenging angel, all beautiful, righteous anger, backlit by the sun streaming through the square window. If it were anyone else, Frank is pretty sure Travis would have pulled the trigger.
But Mel has always bent the rules of the universe, so Travis just nods meekly and tucks his gun into the waistband of his jeans.
Or: Frank and Mel are kidnapped, and somehow it's the most romantic thing ever.

“It would be ideal if I didn’t have to… participate, too much. I don’t want to feel like I'm acting. Or putting on a show. But you could call me whenever you wanted, and you could just…” Mel gestured vaguely to her lap, pleased with herself. “You could just use me.”
Dr. Langdon put his forehead on the steering wheel. “Oh my god,” he muttered. “I am going straight to hell.”

Summary
Mel King is wearing a dress.
And it’s not like he thought Mel was going to show up in her hospital scrubs - he knew she was going to wear a dress. He just hadn’t given himself enough time to prepare for it, because he is, above all things, a world class idiot.
So he hadn’t prepared for it. Seeing her in a dress, which is dark blue and hugs her hips until it flares out at the bottom and makes her look like a fucking mermaid. Watching her twirl around on the dance floor after Mohan and Javadi goad her into it, all of them a glass of wine or two into the evening, cheeks pinker than normal because of the alcohol and highlighted to shit because of the makeup. And then he’s watching her face flush, watching her hide it behind her hands, but because he can’t tell from his position across the room whether she’s flushed because she’s embarrassed or flushed because she’s pleased with herself for what was a killer fucking twirl in a killer fucking dress, he doesn’t know whether the first thing he’s going to do when he corners her later is reassure her that she looked cute or ask her to twirl for him again and again and again until the whole world is spinning as much as his head.

Summary
Mel’s third-favorite scene in Dirty Dancing is only a second long. It’s when Johnny jumps off the stage during the final dance and flips his head up right on cue with the singer crooning “Hey, baby!”
So it was very distracting that, for the rest of the day after her karaoke session with Myrna, Frank had been quietly singing those two words to her every time they ran into each other. A “Hey baby!” when he slid into the chair next to her in the breakroom. Another when they met in the middle both jogging to an ambulance.
She couldn’t help but laugh every time he did it which, knowing Frank, meant he’d probably do it tomorrow, and the next day, and the next.

“Keep your jacket on, cover for me and say I'm having crazy IBS or something. Meet me in the family bathroom in 20. I can cover that up,” Trinity said, as if directing a procedure.
“Cover what up?” Langdon tried, lamely, bringing a palm up to cover his neck.
And this was allegedly the most prolific liar on staff? Ha.

“If you stare any harder,” a voice says, startling Frank where he stands leaning against the charge desk with his arms tightly folded across his chest. “You’re gonna burn a hole through the back of Dr. Miller’s head.”
He glances over at Dana, where the charge nurse mirrors his position, and emits a soft grunt in response.
It wouldn’t be the end of the world.
