Becoming the first human to set foot on Mars was never part of his five-year plan, but he loved his job and couldn't say no when the opportunity arose.
He had spent plenty of time thinking about what he was risking never seeing again if something went wrong; his brother, brother-in-law, and the adorable kid they were adopting, not to mention his friends, his car, and pie.
What he hadn't considered was what, or who, he might find when he actually got there.

“Damn right you did,” Dean snaps sarcastically. “And I guess you’re some kind of angel, aren’t you? Just out and about, saving people, ’n’ happened to stumble on my sorry, dead ass, and just couldn’t leave me out in the cold, huh?”
The stranger tilts his head as if he’s puzzled. “I suppose,” he replies haltingly. “I am Cast—”
“Yeah, well, Cas,” Dean interrupts hostilely, “why don’t you tell me what you really are?” He hefts the cross in his arms, ignoring the sting of his shoulder as it stretches. “Any chance you’re somethin’ I can kill with a stake?”//

Summary
Fire had surrounded Dean his whole life, swallowing him and Sam whole. The kind of fire that didn’t just burn wood and walls, but the kind that burned entire worlds. When he was three, it swallowed his mother and the home they’d built, leaving nothing but ash and smoke in its wake. After that, John Winchester raised him and Sam with calloused hands and a single mission: be strong, be tough, be the kind of men who could stare down the flames. Maybe training his boys to fight the thing that killed their mother helped his dad heal. Dean figures therapy would’ve been better.
