Summary
Andy hadn’t told Joe and Nicky about her and Booker, before. She was afraid they might judge her. It’s hard to live up to their example. Not everybody is made for a 10-century spanning monogamous relationship. She never asked them, but if either one had ended up on the bottom of the sea, she assumed the other would not even look at another man. But she and Quynh had always been a bit more open in these matters, hadn’t they?
She doesn’t know how much any of it had ever meant to Booker. For the first fifty years or so, Booker was fiercely loyal to the memory of his wife. And maybe it was just ease of proximity, after that. Travelling with Joe and Nicky meant the two of them often ended up posing as husband and wife, or sharing the second room.
But Andy fell hard for the man, flawed as he was. She doesn’t know when it happened – time tends to blur for her, and she has long been in the habit of walling off her heart even from herself.
But fall she did, and she bears a heavy price for it.
