Summary
It a gorgeous summer day in 1980, and the Ushiromiya family is on Rokkenjima for a brief business meeting. The older kids play while the adults discuss funds and expanding their companies.
Shannon and Battler have fun playing on the beach and rejoice in sharing their love of mystery novels together. It's an innocent and sweet love, one fleeting and filled with the naïvety of childhood. All of the cousins should be enjoying this day. If not playing, at the very least relaxing in the summer heat. George especially, as a day like this is a reprieve from his life packed with studying and extracurriculars, right?
...George is furious that Battler is stealing away time with a girl he's claimed as his own. Instead of enjoying what the day has to offer, he spends his time watching the two and devising ways to split the two apart in a pit of frustrated, envious rage.

Summary
Natushi is stuck in a difficult place. Her servants are incompetent, her daughter is a failure, she's having reprehensible thoughts of Eva, and she's loving Krauss less each day. Luckily, she always has Kinzo by her side. That loving father, that man who sees how noble she truly is. Although his body is cold and hard, Kinzo can always comfort her in her time of need. Affirm her, give her the right advice. With Father, everything will be okay in the end.
Just a little longer until Krauss settles their debt, then Kinzo can rest. Krauss is taking a very long time scrounging up those funds, though, what if Natsuhi solved the epitaph and got the gold? What if she herself was granted the headship? Natsuhi could imagine the look on everyone's faces. How Eva would apologize for treating her so cruelly. How everyone would look up to her. How proud Kinzo would be. Natsuhi wouldn't be some borrowed womb, some maidservant anymore. Beloved, respected, acknowledged, full of pride. Just like the Head himself.

George suffocates under the weight of his mother grooming him into being the next "head", while Eva clings to George and lives vicariously him. Discomforting, much too close. But that is all either of them know.
