Summary
There was once a joke amongst the Greeks, written into one of Plato's greatest works. Although his goal was to make fun of Aristophenes the old playwright, the idea of humans as beings split in two, each possessing one half of a whole soul, has remained within in our public conscience.
Nowadays, the idea of humans once having four arms, four legs, and two heads seems silly. But the thought of finding someone, one day, with a soul and body that completes yours, is truly a rather romantic idea.Ludwig doesn't think it a very romantic idea. He's rather a pragmatic man. He isn't looking for love, or connection, but for a cure to a sickness he imposed on himself.
Mikhail doesn't think it a possibility at all. He doesn't deny the mark upon his body, the way it itches whenever he wonders about soulmates. But he finds it a silly endeavour, to search for a soul you may not even get along with.
Neither of them are quite sure what to make of the whole 'soulmate' business, and maybe that's why they gravitate towards each other. The selfless man who doesn't believe, and the selfish man who has to believe.

And his heart beats impossibly in Herbert’s grasp, as if responding just to his touch. There’s blood on Herbert’s lips, on his palms, viscera puckering in the folds of his fingerprints, and, oh, it’s all Mikhail’s, all of it, and it smears about Herbert’s mouth in clumps like cheap lipstick.

Herbert and Mikhail consummate their (unlawful) marriage in a very…unique way. It actually proves to be rather therapeutic.

The room is too bright.
It’s quaint, in a nauseating sort of way. Polished floors glint from the gleaming honeycomb chandeliers overhead, make him squint. A few vases sprinkled here and there, filling the room with a sickeningly sweet scent – even a waffle-cone headrest framing the silken sheets of a neatly-tucked bed. Outside, the golden sun gleams, the gentle rays of light spilling past curtains that waver in the afternoon breeze.
It's meant to be beautiful. Luxurious. Welcoming.
With one sweep of his cane, Shadow Milk tears it apart.
