Summary
Grace had joked, occasionally, that they were a liquid and I was a solid, two completely different states of matter; it was a joke because it was an exaggeration, an overstatement. In reality, Grace had bones and teeth, and I had blood and steam, but we both enjoyed the pretense that we were more different than we were. It reminded us that our new friendship was something rare, something strange and special. Grace called themself a blob and called me a hunk of granite (a great insult that I was saving to use again on Erid), or they called themself a water balloon and called me a little mountain, or themself a puddle and me a pile of rocks: and they tilted at me, the human mouth tilt they called a smile, and that tilt always made me think again, lovingly, about the enormous odds against us ever having met.
Stone and water, water and stone. That comparison, even as a joke, never failed to ring a bell deep inside of me. Because I would think about erosion, about the long slow beat of water against rock, and I would think about how the rock was always, in the end, consumed.

Summary
Rocky didn't mention the asteroid belt surrounding Erid's Solar System. After a meteor collides with the Mary, Rocky suffers a fall and is out for the count. Grace knows very little Eridian, but by God, he's gonna get his friend some help.
It's just too bad the Eridians think they're talking to a pebble.
***
"Have fi-x," he whistled. "Life eat. Hurt bad."
Oh, God, this was not gonna work. Not one bit.

Summary
Nine years of survival on Mars, six years of survival in Eden, sixteen years of survival in a C.O.I. prison, and an unknowable amount of time of survival in the SM-13 later, Simon finds himself facing his greatest challenge yet: Believing that the alien molecular biologist and alien engineer who saved his life are not trying to kill, dissect, and study him.
Because he knows they are lying when they say they are here to help. He is going to escape them, and he is going to do whatever it takes. All he has to do is adapt once again, gain their trust, take their ship, forget all about those perfect blue eyes, and escape back to Earth.
How hard could it be?
Or:
Simon wants to steal the Hail Mary and ditch the losers she came with.

Summary
"Well," Grace says, reading over the monitor with Mary's full report, "everything looks good. I'm as healthy as a horse. A healthy horse," he adds, getting ahead of Rocky's inevitable logical objection to the phrase.
"Mm," Rocky hums, "no, Grace not as tall as horse. Hair is shorter, also."
"Are those--" Grace plants his hands on his hips. "Are those the main differences you see between me and a horse?"
(In which Grace has multiple crises, breaks his foot, gets his brain microwaved, learns to hate cherry tomatoes, and becomes a celebrity--not necessarily in that order)
