    Summary

Like tonight, a year ago, Ed was visited by his dead mother.

The dream has always been the accident. Of Edward, strapped to a seatbelt in the passenger seat of their vehicle, and, over and over, being unable to dredge himself out. Neither Trisha nor Al responded to his thrashing, screaming, pleading. The truck always hit.

A year ago, it was different.

Edward stood on the outside, in the grass on the corner of the intersection. The sky was bright blue, clouds corralled around the circle of deadly space made up by two crossing roads. He watched his mother inch into the clearing, watched his own face trapped in the cherubic naivety of childhood, enraptured by the front window. Watched him spot the barreling truck, and, for the first time, witnessed the accident from the exterior.

When Edward was a child, a car accident took the life of his mother and put his brother in a coma. Plagued with nightmares for his entire life, nothing makes anything better. A year after a suicide attempt, Ed is involved in an online friend group who plays a dnd-style RPG together. They convince him to try and come to Xing to play the new regional update: and Edward, believing he outgrew his place in his family, agrees.

    Summary

Trisha hooked her chin over his shoulder. “Look at you. My boys. And look at him, my love. His eyes, their color have come in. Aren’t they something? A blessing from Ishvala.”

    “An inheritance pattern.” He corrected.

“Whatever it may be,” she smiled, “it suits him, doesn’t it?”

Hohenheim remained quiet for a moment before glancing at her. She had gotten good at reading Van and the tragedy in his skin, bracing for the question before it came.

“…And you’re not ashamed of it, Trisha? The ailments the past in your blood has brought to the surface?”

“Of course not,” Trisha responded softly. She reached over and took her son from him. Running the pad of her thumb over the sleeping babe’s face, she laid it on the soft swell of an infant cheekbone. In the bowels of sleep, Ed cooed, resettling against her bare chest with a wet smack of his mouth. What a hungry little thing. “The story our blood tells is not ours, dear. The love of our ancestors does not make monsters.”

Trisha Elric's first born dons the red eyes of her people. She views it as a blessing, but the rest of Amestris is sodden with hate.

    Summary

Wen Qing brandished a tepid glass of Turkey Hill's iced tea lemonade–something with enough sugar to give her a light buzz of quick energy and possibly a cavity or two. She hated anything and everything of the brand, but it was cheaper and all they had in the fridge. Her hand clenched around the bulbed glass as she thought about Wei Wuxian—Wei Wuxian, the infuriating bastard who kept bringing crates of fucking Turkey Hill tea and milk and whatever else he could find with his online-issued coupons from the goddamn Costco.

Wei Wuxian, her other younger brother whose shift ended at seven pm and, as the arms on the clock read, it was 11:48.

    Summary

At first, there was no response. Only the chirping birds outside and the kettle from downstairs made any noise, until—

    “Baba?”

Xichen jumped at the voice, relief quickly flooding his body. He searched around, saying, “oh, thank the gods, you’re okay! Don’t ever—”

He cut himself off, again, when he realized the voice didn’t come from beside him; but above him.

Which— shouldn’t be possible. They didn’t have an attic. So then how the heck—

“...A-Li, baobei,” Xichen put his hands together, feeling oddly numb, “are you in the ceiling?”

Jingyi giggled, “ye-e-es! I found a secret tunnel! Baba, baba! There’s fluffy pink clouds in the walls!”

Xichen’s mind blanked for a solid five seconds. There was no brain, only panic.
    ---

Or, Jingyi explores where he isn't supposed to. Xichen has a panicked crisis.
