Lena Valencia once read a poem about rocks and hardship.
A man with stones for a smile, his teeth a dull glimmer instead of shining pearlescent, found himself bleeding into the cracked concrete of his dusty city. His body resembles an orange, if that orange had been dropped to the ground and thoroughly stepped on, its skin bursting and juice intermingling with the dirt. He would lay there, dying, sticky with blood and concrete dust, and smile shakily at what came next—an angel. Someone he loved, someone he saw. Someone he felt that he was largely unworthy of, with his smile like splintered concrete, dust in his lungs, and blood in his mouth.
