“I had this crush. This childhood crush, but it wasn’t a crush. It was never a crush. I loved him, Mom. And I still love him and it’s so… painful. I said that I never wanted to fall in love because it hurts. It hurts so much, to know that he’s there and I can’t-” Will’s voice falters once again.
“Darling-” Joyce’s voice breaks, and she clears her throat and begins again. “Will, you throw yourself into every single part of life and it makes me so happy. The love that you have, it’s not going anywhere. You don’t have to be ashamed of it, that's all I can ask for. Even through the hurt and the pain that comes from loving someone, I just want you to remember to not forget why you love them, and why you fell in love in the first place.”
Will’s face is still damp and tears still threaten to fall and yet, his mom’s words wash over him like the first drop of rain after a long summer’s day.
“Was it the swingset?”
Will’s breath catches. Of course she knows.

"Do you love him?" Mike slurs, panting. They're both breathing hard and fast, their sternums bumping with each heaving inhale.
Guilt burns white-hot in Will's chest, reminding him of the weight of the situation. What was he going to say to Carlton when he went back to New York? There's no way he could continue their relationship after this, this is impossible to move on from.
"No." Will whispers, his voice just barely audible over the muffled sounds of the party outside.
"Why?" Mike asks, his face a strange mixture of confusion and hopefulness.
Will sighs, shaking his head slightly. "He's just not you. It's not the same."
After one last explosive fight with Mike, Will decides to use college as an opportunity to move on from him. However, filling the void doesn't come easy, even after he starts dating someone new.
AKA the cheating Byler fic I imagined the second I saw Will's epilogue boyfriend on screen.

----When he turns around, Will is already on his bed, because of course he is.
He’s sitting the way he always does– sprawled just slightly, one knee bent, hands braced behind him like he owns the place. Like they are normal. Like they haven’t crossed some invisible line that Mike can’t stop obsessing over.
Something around Mike’s lungs tighten painfully.
God, he wants to kiss him.
He wants to close the distance and press his mouth to Will’s and feel that soft, familiar warmth again. Wants to see if it still feels like lightning. He wants to know if it feels different now, with the sun still up and the house awake and the world very much watching.

---“Chicken,” he said finally.
Will blinked. “Chicken?” He frowned, trying to picture it. “Isn’t that the one where you get up on someone’s shoulders and try to knock the other person off?” The image flashed so suddenly and absurdly that a laugh almost escaped him. He caught it halfway, feeling stupid.
Mike shook his head quickly. His pale cheeks flushed, covering his freckles in a faint pink like he was embarrassed, or maybe warm. Will told himself it was probably just the basement lighting. Or the heat.
“No,” Mike said. “Like… the other game.” He rubbed his thumb against the edge of the blanket, not looking at Will now. “The one where you dare each other to do stuff. And you have to keep going until someone backs out.” He swallowed. “Chicken.”
