    The crew parted like the True sea when they arrived, nobody wanting to be the head that obstructed the first mate’s view. But Jesper wasn’t looking at their captain when they managed to shove their way to the front of the crowd. His eyes had instantly trained on the figure standing next to him, a stranger that stood out like a flower amongst poison ivy.

    A new crewmember has arrived on their ship, but Jesper fails to see what The Slat can do with a prim merchling from Ketterdam. He can't even avoid the kid, not when Kaz keeps insisting they work together (the Captain can be fairly convincing, especially when he gets his cane out).

    Jesper can't stand Wylan. No amount of stupidly soft doe-eyes will change that.

    “If you get out there while you’re drugged there’s no telling what you’ll do,” Wylan said, pushing past Kaz to get back to his work station. “I’d think you'd want to avoid pulling the Dregs into this gang war.” He yanked a cabinet open and rummaged around for a pipette. Opened the vial. Drew out a drop. In his head he ran through the motions of the synthesis: he’d gotten close, before, with the blood sample. All he had to do now was see it through to the finish.

    “I know that.” Kaz’s voice was nearly a snarl, but then again it always sounded like that. There was still time. “I mean, why didn’t you lock it from the outside?”

    “Like that would stop you," Wylan scoffed. "You need an antidote. You said the others were dead within the hour.”

    “Only after killing everyone in their vicinity, Merchling, did you forget that part?”

    “Well,” said Nina, making an effort to sound cheery, knocking her mug into Wylan’s in salute. “Off he goes to Hellgate! He clearly hated listening to you lay out everything he’d ever done wrong under an oath to Ghezen. His expression was almost as tragic as his hairline--”
    Wylan smiled weakly-- and then had it immediately wiped off his face by Kaz’s response.
    “Except he didn't,” said Kaz.
    Everyone’s heads turned.
    “What d’you mean?” frowned Jesper. Wylan stared warily down the table--
    “Wylan didn’t lay out everything his father had ever done wrong.”

    on the day of jan van eck's trial, kaz hounds wylan into admitting something he'd avoided. they all deal with the consequences. some better than others.
