    Ilya's whispered "No" was drowned out by a loud snort from another teammate, who said something like, "Good for lil' bro."

    Ilya shouldn’t feel like dying. Should have expected this to happen at some point. Deserved it, even. He had been ghosting Shane for months, after all.

    In which Ilya knows he's not good enough to be with his best friend's little brother. He spirals over Shane possibly dating someone else nonetheless.

    Alternatively, Ilya will always be the one Shane will still run to.

    The Russian pet name set a firework off inside Shane's mind as he heard it cooed from behind him. The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper.

    He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. Shane would recognize his individual features anywhere, even after 5 years. But it was as if someone had snapped their fingers and the smug, silly Russian boy who had been attached to Shane's hip for 3 summers was transformed into some sort of fucking Adonis right before his eyes.

    “Ilya-” was all Shane managed before strong arms were wrapped around his waist and lifting him off the ground in a greeting all too familiar from years ago.

    For one brief second, Ilya thinks Hollander is going to stop, step out of the walkway, say something. Do anything. 

    Ilya's hand twitches at his side, absurdly, like it's waiting for a handshake that has not happened yet. Like it's preparing for the contact. 

    Instead, Hollander gives him the smallest half-nod, barely there, and walks into the arena. 

     

    OR: One bad World Juniors drops Ilya Rozanov to sixth overall in the draft and Shane Hollander goes first. Rozanov decides he’s going to spend his career proving the league wrong. What he doesn’t plan on is becoming fixated on Hollander in the process. On the way he plays, the way he watches Rozanov right back. Somewhere along the way, it stops being about the league’s attention and starts being about keeping Hollander’s.

    Shane was just at practice. People didn’t die at hockey practice. That was just stupid. The article was stupid. Shane was fine. Shane would call him back any minute now, and they would laugh about how stupid it was together.

    In fact, he was probably laughing with his teammates about something boring.

    He definitely hadn’t taken an ill-timed puck to the chest or a skate to the throat or hit his head so hard that he-

    Fuck.

    OR

    Shane stays late after practice, and the Internet convinces Ilya that he died there. Ilya handles it about as well as you'd imagine.

    Oh and Hayden is there too.
