Summary
Xie Lian scoops Hong-er up with him, but to his surprise the little body in his arms suddenly tenses. Humming softly, he gives Hong-er a bounce to encourage him to relax his weight; when this doesn’t work like it usually does, his brow furrows. “Hong-er?”
Hong-er squirms again, and so Xie Lian sets him down. Almost immediately, he grabs Xie Lian’s hand and tugs him back towards the desk. “We gotta stay here,” he explains, scrambling under it.
“Oh?” Xie Lian arches an eyebrow curiously, but allows himself to be shepherded under the desk, too. “How come?”
“We gotta hide from the monsters,” Hong-er explains, holding a finger up to his lips. “Shh, gege. They can hear us.”
Hua Cheng regresses to Hong Hong-er and decides to play a game of hide and seek with his very favorite gege. Unfortunately, they meet a few monsters along the way.

Summary
On Xie Lian’s hundredth birthday, a silver butterfly finds him: it is followed, shortly, by a fanged and feral ghost.
Xie Lian is leery, at first, and draws his sword to keep the ghost at bay as it circles him. It’s really only logical! The ghost is a beast of a thing—tall and whipcord thin, with matted hair and blood-caked boots and tattered robes. This close to Mount Tonglu, Xie Lian can only expect that it’s in the middle of the centennial ghost slaughter; as such, it will naturally be more aggressive.
Only, the ghost doesn’t attack him.
Xie Lian and Hua Cheng meet several centuries early, and Xie Lian must learn to live with the wild ghost who's taken a keen interest in him.

Summary
When it comes to something like this, there are a few important steps:
First, Xie Lian makes sure that his husband is busy. Something like that makes it sound so terrible, but it’s not—it’s really not! It’s just that Hua Cheng can be overprotective, and if he saw this he would react poorly. Xie Lian would rather spare him that.
Second, Xie Lian puts Ruoye away. The poor thing never wants to go. He has to tie it somewhere safe and placate it with gentle touches and soothing words. Even so, it still lashes its ends and strains after him until he leaves the room. It will cling too tightly when he returns.
Third, Xie Lian goes somewhere quiet and familiar. It can be the armory, or their private baths, or even the shrine near Puqi Village. It is never their bedroom. It is never their cottage.
Fourth, Xie Lian draws his sword.
Fifthly, finally, Xie Lian takes a deep breath, closes his eyes, and carves his own skin open.

Summary
“Maybe it’s a little strange,” Xie Lian allows, “but I think that’s okay. Anyway, San Lang has been neglected for too long. If he needs a lot of attention and reassurance now that’s okay. Gege’s arm is very strong, and he won’t get tired soon.”
The blush on Hua Cheng’s face deepens, and he covers his face with his hands. “Gege,” he groans. “Leave me a little face.”
“Of course, sweet boy,” Xie Lian says indulgently. “Now, come here, across my lap.”
Xie Lian and Hua Cheng decide to add a few new rules to their relationship. Hua Cheng finds himself breaking them, more often than not—but Xie Lian knows exactly how to deal with his needy, misbehaving husband.

“I’m just saying, if you ever needed money there’d be plenty, so don’t worry about—hey.” He scowls, whipping around to face her. “We’re not friends.”
“Okay.”
“I don’t have friends.”
“Okay.”
“Xie Lian is the only one I give two shits about.”
“Hua Cheng,” Yushi Huang says gently, smiling. “It’s okay.”
The Rain Master befriends her local feral Ghost King—much to the Ghost King's chagrin.

Summary
The first prayers are hazy, fragmented things. They’re wordless, made only of emotion and impression—a flash of longing, the burden of grief, an overwhelming scent of blood. They lurk in the corners of his mind at all times, but they don’t feel like they belong to him. They feel other.
Xie Lian thinks he’s going crazy.
Hua Cheng prays for centuries as he searches for his god. His god hears.

"San Lang?” he whispers. “San Lang, do you want to try—ahem, that, again?”
Hua Cheng squints up at him, blinking blearily, and mumbles something incoherent.
“Here,” Xie Lian coaxes, lacing fingers through his hair and guiding him towards a nipple. “You can—can suck, if you want.”

Summary
“Alright, alright,” Xie Lian amends hastily, “but it’s just a little pinch. It can’t hurt that bad. It’s not any worse than what we sometimes do in bed, when you—”
“Gege!” Hua Cheng looks really aggrieved, now. “How can it be the same?”
“Because you’re doing what I want,” Xie Lian says, trying dutifully to ignore the heat creeping across his face. “Would it help if I ordered you? If San Lang didn’t have a choice?”
Hua Cheng and Xie Lian are trapped and starving; the solution, to Xie Lian, seems obvious. Hua Cheng disagrees.

Summary
Feng Xin would like to think that he has become accustomed to the variety of strange (and often unfortunate) events that surround Xie Lian. He has become accustomed to the flights of fancy, and the trash collecting, and the occasional ill-fated culinary quest. He has even, as of late, become accustomed to His Highness’ cripplingly poor choice in spouse.
Despite all of Feng Xin’s practice in these unfortunates, however, he is not prepared for this.
“Who are you?” Xie Lian stares up at him from a puddle of oversized white robes, his eyes wide. He is several sizes too small, and several shades too oblivious. “And, um. Where are we?”
Beside him, Mu Qing sighs very very very deeply and pinches the bridge of his nose.
When a curse turns Xie Lian into a child again, Feng Xin, Mu Qing, and Hua Cheng have to work together to keep him safe. Needless to say, this is a trying task for all of them.

Summary
“Do you sense any resentful energy around? I’ve sensed it here and there—mostly around the people I went to speak with today. I think it may have been leftover from the ghost’s original attacks.”
Hua Cheng is quiet for a moment before replying, “I sense it everywhere.”
Xie Lian shivers, even in the blanketed warmth of the summer evening, and Hua Cheng’s fingers tighten around his.
“Gege doesn’t need to worry. Whatever is here, I won’t let it hurt him,” Hua Cheng says fiercely.
Xie Lian and Hua Cheng travel to a small village to answer a sudden influx of alarming prayers; the ghosts they find there are more personal than they ever expected.

Summary
“San Lang knows how angry it makes me when he says such cruel things about himself,” Xie Lian says. “How sad it makes me.”
A flicker of guilt crosses Hua Cheng’s face, and he starts to pull back—Xie Lian tightens his grip and refuses to let him.
“San Lang,” Xie Lian continues, “is my dear, precious, beloved husband. There is no one more deserving of this. But if he needs a reminder, then of course this gege will be happy to give him a very thorough one.”
Hua Cheng has been stressed recently, and so Xie Lian suggests a special day of spoiling for him. Although usually keen to accept his gege’s spoiling, Hua Cheng discovers he has a difficult time accepting it when he feels so undeserving.

Summary
“What did they do?” Hua Cheng demands. Then, to the robbers: “What the fuck did you do to him?!”
“San Lang, shh, don’t be mad. They tried to rob me, but they didn’t hurt me. Really! My face only looks like this because I fell into a rock!”
Hua Cheng wilts: this is devastatingly believable.
A pair of robbers accosts Xie Lian outside of Puqi Village. They were expecting an easy ransom from a rich husband. They were not expecting the wrath of Crimson Rain Sought Flower, or free relationship advice from the husband of the world’s leading expert in codependency. They got both.

Summary
Ruoye abandons his play and bolts to Xie Lian’s side, his eyes wide and his ears pricked: the boy smells like blood and disease, but he clings to Xie Lian with startling strength. Ruoye searches for the boy’s daemon, eager to check that it is safe after such a fall. He finds nothing.
Even when Xie Lian carries the boy back to the palace, no daemon shows itself. Ruoye can’t smell one on him, either; he will not understand why until weeks later, when ghosts flood to Taicang Mountain. He hears the whispers, then: the boy is cursed, daemonless, a freak and a monster and a creature best left for dead.
Fuck that, Ruoye thinks.
Or: TGCF ft. daemons.

Lan Zhan stops before him, standing stiff and straight. He meets Wei Wuxian’s eyes—glaring! He’s glaring at Wei Wuxian! Wow, he hasn’t done that in a while! “I spoke with Lan Jingyi today.”
“Okay,” Wei Wuxian says, arching his eyebrows. He knows Lan Jingyi can be a handful, but really, he’s not that bad. “I’m sorry?”
“He told me that you have not been eating.”
Wei Wuxian chuckles. This is not the appropriate response.

Summary
“Okay, San Lang, let’s talk,” Xie Lian says, and is proud of how steady his voice stays. “Tell me about the cuts.”
“You talked to E-ming, didn’t you,” Hua Cheng says bleakly.
“It only confirmed what I already suspected.” Xie Lian closes his eyes. “Can you tell me that those injuries aren’t from who I think they are?”
“Dianxia is so clever.” Hua Cheng looks at him, and there is a sudden exhaustion written in the lines around his eye. “I could tell you they aren’t, but...this San Lang is tired of lying to his god.”
Despite his suspicions, to hear it admitted so plainly from Hua Cheng’s own mouth feels like a fist to his heart. Xie Lian takes a deep, deep, deep breath. Calmly. Calmly and clearly. He has already done his crying. He is not going to freak out right now. He is not going to yell. He is not going to yell. He is not—
“What were you thinking, Hua Cheng?!”
When E-ming is stolen and its curse activated by enemies, Xie Lian fully expects the chorus of pained howls he hears outside of Paradise Manor. What he does not expect is the multitude of raw, gaping wounds that split open along his husband’s skin.

Summary
Xie Lian does feel bad for the clones, sometimes. They enjoy it—he knows they enjoy it, because he’s spoken to them before, and because they’re Hua Cheng and they enjoy what Hua Cheng enjoys. The sex, no matter how violent, is always a mutually satisifying arrangement. It’s the after that Xie Lian worries about. Hua Cheng never allows his clones to stay, in the after. As soon as he’s climaxed, he snaps his fingers and dissipates that other bloody body.
Xie Lian wishes he would wipe the blood off, first. He wishes that Hua Cheng would let them catch their breaths. He wishes that he and his clone could lie together quietly, recovering. He wishes—he wishes—he wishes—
Xie Lian likes it when Hua Cheng is nice to himself. (Now, if only Hua Cheng didn't find it so emotionally devastating.)

“I wanted to be beautiful for Dianxia,” Hua Cheng admits quietly, ducking his head. “I wanted you to think I was beautiful.”
“I did. I do.” Dianxia’s fingers touch the line of his deathscar. “But ah, San Lang, you are really wise, aren’t you?”
“...Dianxia?”
“To voice your insecurities like this,” Dianxia explains, “where your gege can help you fight them. How clever of my San Lang!”

Summary
When the thick black fog of the curse clears, there’s a child standing in front of Xie Lian. He’s small—he’s so, so small—and as soon as he sees Xie Lian, he wraps his arms around himself and hunches his shoulders like he’s trying to make himself even smaller. There is not a single spark of recognition in that wide, wild eye.
“...San Lang?!”
When a curse turns Hua Cheng into a child again, it's up to Xie Lian to take care of him. It's a task easier said than done, when Hua Cheng's memories have regressed along with the rest of him.

Summary
“I’ll be done in just a moment, sweet boy,” Xie Lian says. He’s elbow-deep in their sink, warm water sliding between his fingers as he washes their dishes. Iridescent suds, sharp with the scent of bergamot, lather his skin. “Thank you for being so patient.”
Hua Cheng hums softly in response. He hasn’t spoken since dinner: he’s still so far under it makes Xie Lian’s heart throb. After all, it isn’t often that Hua Cheng allows himself to indulge this headspace for long stretches of time, which makes today particularly unusual—and particularly important.
