The sound didn’t register at first. He was hardly paying attention in the first place, yet the unnecessarily loud volume that Macau insisted the TV be at ensured he heard it.
A gunshot. Sudden and grating, his eyes focused on the screen automatically. Several more followed, four in a row if he wanted to be precise. The woman on the screen fell to the floor, blood all over her torso.
He blinked forcefully, the water gathering in his eyes scarcely bothering him when the image of Vegas dying was vivid in his mind. His spine stiffened where he sat. Breathing unsteady. The sound of the gunshots wouldn’t stop repeating themselves.
Or, the one where Pete comes to the horrifying realisation that he is far, far from okay.

The beat was steady and had been for hours. Yet he did not trust it to keep going. Somehow convinced that the moment he closed his eyes and allowed himself to relax, it would flatline. And the silence after would deafen him. Pete had already thought Vegas was dead once.

The two of them get engaged the summer after graduation. The announcement makes front page news in the Korean Herald and Hyunjin’s mom puts a clipping of it on the fridge right next to a copy of Seungmin’s senior thesis paper and acceptance letter into Harvard Business School. It’s the first time Hyunjin’s ever been featured there post-elementary school, when his macaroni art was just slightly more advanced than the other kids in his class, and the sight of it leaves a bitter taste in his mouth because he did nothing to deserve the spot of honor. Unless the culmination of his life’s success is simply marrying Kim Seungmin.
Hyunjin’s tasked with picking out their engagement rings, a pair of golden Tiffany bands. He sends Seungmin’s to him in the mail. His mom has to text Hyunjin the address. He doesn’t have Seungmin’s number saved in his phone.

Summary
It’s the most they’ve been around each other since they moved out of their old dorms, and Seonghwa finds himself thrown out of his equilibrium every once in a while. He thought that years of sharing a room with Hongjoong had inoculated him against the mesmerizing power of Hongjoong’s presence. But this whole process has only served to remind Seonghwa how impossible it is for anyone to take their eyes off Hongjoong, how inevitable that one would be affected by his gravitational pull.
