Summary
“It’s not your fault if those people weren’t prepared to grow with you." Steve's voice is slow and soft, like the first warm embrace of a summer breeze following a particularly cold winter. “And for those who don’t...well, fuck ‘em.”
Then, he feels it. Fingers, quiet and hesitant, pressing gently against his own. They linger only for a moment—
And then, they’re gone.

Summary
Jonathan Alonzo Byers is going to kill himself on Saturday, November 12th, 1983. Or he might if he doesn’t spend the night in a jail cell. Because on top of everything else—his brother disappearing and turning up dead, his mother losing her god damn mind, Nancy convincing him his mother might have a point, some fucking portal in the woods opening up to another fucking dimension, Steve fucking Harrington calling him a screw up and a queer, at least two of his fingers feeling broken, and the handcuffs digging into his wrists during the uncomfortable ride in the backseat of a police car—he’s got a fucking boner.
or
5 times Jonathan thought about killing himself and 1 time Steve thought about killing Jonathan.

Summary
The reminder that he can’t keep up, that he can’t be one of the cool kids, stings.
He’s no Steve Harrington. He’s just Lucas. He’s a nerd, a loser, a nobody.
He can’t stand it, suddenly.
“Don’t tell,” he begs, looking up at her in time to see her eyebrows knit together in concern. “Don’t— Don’t tell anyone I couldn’t be cool.”
Lucas finds himself struggling at the post-championship game party.

Summary
Steve falls asleep on the carpet, head tipped back against the old couch. Jonathan debates waking him. Doesn’t. He drapes a blanket over him instead, careful not to touch too much.
Steve murmurs something in his sleep. Jonathan’s name, maybe. Maybe not.
Jonathan sits on the edge of the couch and listens to Steve breathe until the tightness in his chest eases just a fraction.
He doesn’t question any of it.
He’s tired of questioning things.
