In the middle of a breakdown, Basil runs into the rainswept city, terrified of what college in an unfamiliar city has done to his brain over the last year.
By some stroke of pure fate, Aubrey is the one to find him on the sidewalk. She invites Basil to spend the summer finding himself, far away from his problems, roadtripping with her in her beat-up van. He accepts gratefully.
What follows is a ridiculous whirlwind of colorful shenanigans, old faces, childhood memories, and falling in love over and over.

Summary
After a small argument at breakfast time, Aubrey is left thinking about how Basil constantly lets people walk all over him. This gives her a burning determination to help him stand up for himself and be less of a doormat.
At the same time, she glances at her nail bat, stashed in the corner of Basil's living room. She thinks back to how wrecking stuff with it helped her become more confident and aggressive. So, she comes up with the genius idea to give him her bat and take him out to the junkyard!
Or: Aubrey teaches Basil to stand up for himself by coaching him on how to swing her bat.
