Andrew could list a dozen ways to describe Neil, from the easy laugh that lit up his features to the quiet way in which he carried himself. But no words came close. Deep down, though, Andrew knew this crush was one-sided and someone that he couldn’t have. They weren’t in the same social groups. Andrew stuck to his group, while Neil hung with the athletes.

As Andrew followed behind the girls, he watched them try samples of different candies. Their faces lit up with pure joy every time they tasted something new. It was a sight that made his heart feel warm. He thought about how different his childhood had been. When he was just seven years old, he was busy learning about the harsher realities of life, and he didn’t have the chance to be as carefree and playful as the twins were now. The thought of this still puzzled him today.

After talking with Betsy and Andrew, he thought it would be best to begin this conversation in her office. He wasn’t really scared that his sister would hurt him, but having Betsy there made him feel a little safer and more comfortable. He knew that was a conversation he should've had with her a while ago, and just the idea of how she might react terrified him.

The day that Nathalia found out who she was, she was only four.
That was because she had learned how to read at a young age. After all, her father had beaten it into her since she was an infant that he wasn’t raising a stupid child and would rather have killed her than have someone who couldn’t take after him. So she had quickly learned, and learned how to keep her mouth good and shut in school.
The second lesson that she quickly learned was that she was not a she. In fact, Nathalia was sure that she was a he. Nathalia didn’t like being called “girl,” “she,” “her,” “female,” or even “young lady.” Nathalia specifically hated to be called by their name.
Neil is trans, but his family doesn't know that he is as he struggles.

This was definitely not his problem. It was way above his scope of responsibility or what he was supposed to be dealing with. He felt apprehensive about it all, knowing that he should probably just mind his own business. He knew that whatever was happening… that look that they had given each other was none of his business whatsoever, and he quite frankly didn’t want to know either, as he shoved his own personal feelings about the subject of romance aside.

And in that moment, he decided that he would become that knight to protect her against the world.
Over and over, he had protected her from their mother’s abuse, from their father’s business. He would sing her lullabies to sleep, telling her stories of a princess who would be saved and live happily ever after, and teaching her how to build sandcastles and hem up her favorite dress.

Summary
And Neil was familiar with that feeling. He was all too aware of the absence after Wymack had passed away six years ago. But what he wasn’t expecting was that today of all days would be what broke him as he stood in his and Andrew’s bathroom, feeling as if he couldn’t breathe.
The panic was there, sitting right beneath the surface, but still, it felt like he couldn’t breathe as he didn’t know what to do. He didn’t know why today was worse than others, why he was feeling like this.
Time seemed to slip past him before he was out of the house, and he found himself running for what seemed to be hours on end.
Where he ended up was in a park. He didn’t know which one, but he felt spent as he rubbed his arms, realizing how cold it was outside, but uncaring of the bite of the chilly October air.
Still, the overwhelming feeling of wrongness and of missing something vital persisted.
It wasn’t until he finally managed to pry his phone from his pocket that he realized the significance of the date.
October 15th.
Today would have been Wymack’s 60th birthday.
