Summary
Dream challenges them, and they raise their weapons in turn. Eret; wonderful, kind, and lovely Eret, who turned their back on them. Niki feels the sword slide into her chest, between her ribs, and she wakes up on the verge of tears.
Be strong, she tells herself. They call her dainty, pretty, kind and soft. She is not ashamed of these things, and she prides herself in also being loyal, brave and unafraid to stand up for herself underneath it all. She has decided to fight for L'manburg. To follow Wilbur. And that's what she'll do.
(And Niki will look back on herself after months, and maybe she'll laugh or cry, or at least heave a wistful sigh.)
Or, local (badass) baker turned (badass) soldier turned (badass) warrior learns what it’s like to heal, and that sometimes it’s impossible be there for your friends when you’re drowning too.

Summary
Scar studies him. Glances at the feathers curtaining his view of the throne room's entrance, then slides his gaze back to Grian's dancing eyes. Fighting a losing battle is difficult enough; fighting one you've lost before it's even begun is impossible. "Yeah, alright," he says, resigned to the tendrils of fondness cinching thorny vines around his heart. "Let's hear it."
Another flash of teeth, dyed red in the light spilling through Grian's feathers. "The 'Not A Resistance' Resistance," he says, low and teasing, "would like to cordially invite you to kiss me stupid." He lets that simmer in the shred of air between them before tacking on, measured and thoughtful: "This is a time-sensitive invitation, by the way, so you should figure out your answer in the next ten to fifteen seconds."

Summary
"What is that," Grian doesn't ask, voice flat.
"A melon," Scar replies, nonchalant. He rolls the melon over in his lap, eyes tracing its curve, then holds out his hand– curling and uncurling his fingers in the universal sign for gimme. "Hand me your axe, will you?"
"Where," Grian says, "did you get a melon?"
