“Bleeding.” Claire brings her chubby little hand up to point at his forehead.
Henry touches his cold fingers to his forehead, realizing the bandage he’d placed over his eyebrow has been bled through. He thinks he’s got more in the center console. He hopes.
“Daddy’s alright,” he assures her, finally snapping the buckle together over her puffy pink coat. He gives her the best smile he can muster. “Ready to go for a drive?”
Claire nods at him, big blue eyes inquisitive as he palms her hair, thumb brushing blonde locks off her forehead. “Where’s we goin’?”
“Somewhere better,” he says, and closes the back door tight.

Summary
The first time Henry sees Alex race, his brain can’t understand what he’s seeing. He’s 14 and Alex is 13, and Alex is smaller than everyone, but so much more confident and brave.
He pushes Philip wide and overtakes on the last lap, pushing the throttle down on his kart to cross the finish line a full second ahead of Philip.
“He’s bloody reckless!” Philip shouts, ripping his helmet off once he’s out of his kart. Like second is unacceptable.
Henry stops watching Alex celebrate.
Philip’s hair looks dumb.
Their dad laughs, dropping an arm around Philip’s shoulder. “He’s not. He just beat you.” He looks over at Alex. Henry looks, too, taking any excuse he can. “We’ll have to watch out for him.”

“Sorry, what?” Henry says, voicing Alex’s stuttering thoughts as well.
(After one too many fights at work, Henry and Alex are assigned mandatory reconciliation therapy by their boss. Except the therapist thinks they're there for couples therapy... and surely, a bet on who will break first makes more sense than actually correcting her, right?)

I had hoped to remember November 6th as the day we could celebrate the first woman President of the USA. I guess, they are not yet ready for that.
While it has been heartbreaking, disappointing, enraging, and betraying, I’d still like to believe in and stand for good. I will still rage. I will still sing.
Thankful for this author who came that day with this warm hug. I wish someone made pancakes for me, though.

Summary
When the power goes out, Alex and Henry are sitting in their living room watching the latest fantasy show to hit Netflix. Alex has his feet in Henry’s lap, and his head pressed up against the side of the couch. One of Henry’s hands is burning a hole through the thin spread of Alex’s pajama pants where it’s resting on his shin. Everything goes out like a flash of lightning, but it takes a moment for it to really register that they’re left lying in the dark.
When it does, Alex sits up, the backs of his calves pressing into the firm weight of Henry’s thighs. He tries not to think about that, though, even as Henry’s hand tightens around his calf. The moon’s shining through the window, so it’s not like they’re blanketed in total darkness, but when Alex looks at Henry, and Henry looks at Alex, the shadows drifting over his face, it feels as if all the light has been sucked out of the world entirely.

This is most definitely not his finest idea. Henry usually practices much better self preservation skills. Much better common sense skills. He steps over the threshold of Alex’s room and it feels like sealing his fate.
They’re doing this for Alex to win over their bosses in a lighthearted game with a harmless lie, but Henry can’t fight off the bitter knowledge that, regardless of how tonight goes, Alex will be fine, but Henry has so much to lose.
