Peter grins. “Anytime.” He takes a slow step towards her, his gaze dropping to her lips as he shrugs his shoulder. “I guess all that’s left for us to decide now is how we commemorate this really special occasion.”
MJ drums her fingers against the side of her plastic cup. “Oh yeah?”
“Yeah.”

“Listen, um, about the ring.” MJ swallows. “I’ve been meaning to get it back to you and I keep forgetting. Can we…maybe meet for coffee and I’ll give it to you then?”
Peter shakes his head. “I don’t want it back. Honestly, it’s…it was always meant for you.”
MJ nods, something in her deflating. “Okay.”
“We can meet for coffee though,” Peter adds quietly. “You don’t…you don’t need to have something to give me.”
“Right.”
Peter lets out a breath and smiles at her. “See you for coffee?” he asks.
MJ smiles back at him, nodding her head as her throat tightens. “See you for coffee.”

He turns around so fast he almost gets whiplash. He points at his own chest. "Me?"
She frowns. "Yeah, you."
“Peter,” he croaks.
“I didn't ask.”
“Oh. Sorry,” he says.
She gives him a weird look. “You got a spare pen?” she asks.
His arm jerks forward awkwardly to grab his lidless blue pen from his desk, and without a second thought he turns around and hands it over to her.
She smiles as she takes it. “Thanks.”
Peter smiles back, but his smile quickly turns to a frown when he belatedly realises…that was his only pen.

“I miss her,” he says quietly. The admission makes her stomach flutter.
“What about you, Michelle?”
“I miss him, too.”
She looks down at their joined hands, her wedding ring glinting in the light. He squeezes her hand and it feels like he’s squeezing her heart, like he’s saying I’m here, I hear you.
For all that it’s crossed her mind to leave, she’s never been able to give up on Peter Parker. She isn’t about to start now."

And the problem isn’t that she doesn’t know her own mind, her own wishes and hopes, because she does and she has for quite some time now. Even years ago, when she couldn’t even get naked in front of Peter, it had been right there at the edge of her mind, this idea of one day.
Because as hard as the whole of her life had become in the aftermath, Michelle Jones has never been a quitter when it comes to the things that matter the most, the things she wants the most.
