Kogane frowns. “You really care about that stuff?”
Lance’s eyes are threatening to bulge out of their sockets from sheer disbelief. “Dude,” he says, feeling permanent wrinkles etch themselves into his forehead, his extensive, retinol-based skincare routine be damned. “You’ve been my arch-rival this whole time and you hadn’t noticed?”
“We’re not rivals,” Kogane says stubbornly. “We shared a water bottle.”

Caitlyn lets out a sigh and plops down on the bench in the center of the locker room. Her mother is under the impression that she is in Science Bowl right now, memorizing the elements of the periodic table or whatnot. Which she was doing, to be fair, as of five minutes ago. But now, she is sitting up straight, folding her clammy hands over her backpack, and staring at an oddly-shaped water stain on the grey wall, hoping, praying that the boxing team practice would end, as the receptionist had said, at 5:45 PM.
And if the only girl on the school boxing team would enter the locker room soon after, then that was just a coincidence.
