Anyhow, they make it work. Haphazardly, yes. Some days are better than others. Today's okay; today Kazuma sits close, close to Ryunosuke on the bench of his desk, so that their thighs touch. He's not too overheated or overstimulated for that. It's nice. It's nice, and his voice doesn't drag too, too much as he briefs Ryunosuke on the case. Slurred words, yes. But it's a good one of those days. Ryunosuke will treasure it anyway.
So eventually Ryunosuke can draw him away, away from the case files, away from the desk, back into bed. And Kazuma's not overheated, not too overstimulated, so he presses up against Ryunosuke as they crawl into the futon, front pressed to Ryunosuke's back. He's there. He's there. He's here.
Ryunosuke presses back into him. I love you. Just a reminder.

Kazuma can feel the true length of forever stretching out in front of them in the ensuing hollow silence. In two or twenty or forty years, still sleeping upwards of fourteen hours a day, still dealing with pain splitting his head open, still struggling to organize his thoughts. Still forgetting, and forgetting, and forgetting, retreading the same steps ad nauseam. Like God is at his shoulder, mocking: This is what you get for cheating death.
