He imagined they would think of him differently if they knew Crozier had once had him flogged. Perhaps they would respect him more. Then again, perhaps they would assume he was only obedient because he was afraid. It was unlikely, Jopson expected, that anyone would see it the way he had chosen to – as something like a baptism.
In which Jopson gets flogged, Crozier remembers, and both of them are Extremely Normal about this. Rated Mature for violence; this isn't strictly slash, in that nobody in this story is fully admitting their feelings even to themselves, but it isn't strictly gen either.

“Ah, I always burn,” he sighs. “Even with sunblock on.”
In truth, Alex finds it charming, the boys—his boys, at least for the moment—all ruddy from the sun, vital and gleaming with sweat.
“We could go in,” he suggests, fortifying himself inwardly against the moment either of them will hem, hesitate, say, well, actually, we’d better be going—but that moment hasn’t arrived yet for each smiles in his way, Tom big and open and Tommy’s more thoughtful and wry, and they begin picking up the remnants of their repast.

By all accounts, Brighton was a pleasant and healthful seaside resort. James’s doctor had recommended he summer there, as the clean sea air and cool saltwater would do wonders for the joints that occasionally pained him still. And in addition to the restorative properties of the sea, the city boasted frequent social opportunities and creature comforts. The monarchy, of course, had had its residence there, but the sale of the Royal Pavilion to the city that very year seemed not to have abated the enthusiasm of many notable persons, as well as their gawkers and hangers-on, for the city in general and the Pavilion in particular.
