The officers of the Franklin Expedition live to die another day.

    1860

“Mr. Jopson,” said James. “I had hoped I might question you.”

It was a plain falsehood. It was Francis he’d hoped to question. And he would have questioned him, too, save that he was three days too late; the old Irishman who lived on the hill with only his manservant for company — the navy man — yes, Crozier, the same who’d been in the papers some years past for that awful business in the Arctic — was dead. Dropsy, said the doctor.

AN: I completed this work on 2024-10-19, at which time Archive.org was nonoperational due to a DDoS attack. Now that Archive.org is fully back online, I'm reposting this fic (2024-12-02) with the author's notes I initially wanted to include for Ch. 7, including excerpts about Netsilik Inuit shamanism and conflict resolution from a 1970s anthropology book.

    Summary

Charlie always gets along with the flyboys in her classes.

It was ’84 the first time she tried it with a student.

His name was Dave Hendricks. He was pretty and, pressed up against the sinks in the men’s room on Animal Night, she told him so.

Later that week Johnson called her in. “It’s not fraternization,” he said, “but it’s damn close.”

Dale Lee was the next one. He was pretty, too, but this time she didn’t say it. What she said was, “I just don’t want anyone to know that I’ve fallen for you.”

    Summary

Jopson sets forth a favourite fantasy.

Thomas returned his attention to the hem he was mending and said, “I was thinking, sir, if you’d been my steward...”

    “What, on the Expedition?”

“On any voyage, sir. Supposing I was a captain and you was my steward, a young man of three-and-twenty.”

Francis snorted, and answered, “No doubt I’d do a piss-poor job of it.”

“Your blood does run rather hot for service, sir. But I believe you would be loyal.”

    Summary

On a visit to the Blanky family, Crozier is dogged by vivid dreams of living among the Inuit.

In an icehouse the size of a cathedral, Francis married his Inuit bride. She was a dark-haired girl, her braids sleekly looped. Walking up the aisle, she was obliged to sidestep a man mending the skins of his qayaq.

As the priest guided the couple through their vows, Francis scanned the assembled guests. His mother and sisters were in attendance, as was Tom Blanky. Francis was surprised the man had come, after— what was it? He was conscious of some wrong, and in struggling towards it he found himself again awake.

“I heard you talking in your sleep,” said Thomas. “Couldn’t understand it.”

    “I suppose that was Inuktitut.”

“Yes,” agreed Thomas, “it did sound so.”

The anguish came on him first, and suddenly; only a moment later did he remember Tom Blanky was dead.

“Tom was in the dream.” Then, “I’d have told him, Jopson, I would. I’d have told him if he’d lived.”

    Summary

Maid-of-all-work Thomasin Jopson despairs of ever gaining the attentions of her mistress, Frances Fitzjames (née Crozier) — but does a woman not bring her habits to widowhood?

Why, Thomasin wondered, should her devotion, her affection, so amuse her mistress? Did Frances suppose that because Thomasin was a servant she had no finer feelings? Did she think that Thomasin’s mild temper rendered her as insensate as a china doll? To endure such belittlement was like choking on lye.

Just now Mrs. Fitzjames would be writing letters. Before Thomasin could think better of it she entered the house, ascended the stairs, and threw open the door of her mistress’s study.

“Dismiss me without a character,” she said.

    Summary

Bridgens calls on Morfin to help him demonstrate a principle to Lieutenant Irving.

"Seaman Morfin!" snapped Irving. "Does Mr. Bridgens— does he minister to your bodily needs in an... unwholesome way?"

John laughed. Irving gasped, and John — eyes still closed — imagined the colour rising yet higher in his china doll cheeks.

    “Answer me!” Irving demanded.

“You mean,” answered John, “does he put his hand under my blankets and frig me? Aye, he does, at that.”

At length, Irving said, “Mr. Bridgens: you gave me to understand that your relations with Mr. Peglar had the character of a marriage. And now you admit that there are others. That you engage in sodomy with others. How do you explain this?”

    Summary

Devotion to his Captain notwithstanding, Thomas Jopson gets mixed up in the grizzled ice-master’s seduction of an innocent young AB.

“You both must be more discreet,” said Thomas as he set himself to neatening Hartnell’s hair. “If the Captain catches you, you’ll be flogged for dirtiness.”

There was a sting there, but it was not for the Thomas of the present to feel. Such private anguishes might be indulged early in the morning or just before bed (or, say, when watching the flesh be flayed from Hickey’s backside), but were unfit for working hours.

“Our Frank?” scoffed Blanky. “Doesn’t sound like the man I know.”

    Summary

Ed’s attempt to get into his new neighbour’s designer slacks takes an unexpected turn when the film they were planning to watch gets mixed up with an entirely different sort of movie.

Stede frowns in puzzlement at the video sleeve. “That’s an… interesting spelling of ‘centurion,’” he says, wrinkling his nose. “Is that, perhaps, Ecclesiastical Latin? I confess I’m not very familiar with the post-Classical period.”

“Yeah, mate, that one’s not a, uh. Not a very ecclesiastical movie.”

“Oh!” exclaims Stede, looking up. “So you’ve watched it already, then? Is it any good?”
