After a second of feeling sorry for himself, he pressed his back to the wall between his door and Jupiter’s old one. With shaking hands, he began to pull the most unruly of his feathers out, gripping them at the base the way his father had taught him.
You need to remove those awful things. You’re becoming a sight.
I’m sorry, Father.
You should be.
The pain made his eyes water, a stinging that lingered like needle pricks. Small amounts of blood began to trickle from the holes. He always tried to get it done as fast as possible, it was more painful that way, but faster. People worried less if you took less time. And anyway, less time spent plucking meant more time to stop the bleeding before somebody noticed.

Jupiter North had expensive tastes.
When he had developed these, he wasn’t so sure.Perhaps it was in his parent’s house, where they insisted on having the finest things.
Or perhaps it was back in the Deucalion, where the mattress was always exactly as he liked.
The beds in the Elder’s Living Quarters were not expensive. More expensive than the ones in the dormitories, sure, but not as expensive as Jupiter was used to.
It was embarrassing to shuffle around so much, the sheets grating at his skin, eyes nearly watering with the leftovers of Elder Wong’s cologne. His heart pounded uncomfortably in his chest, so loudly he wondered if it would deafen him.

Summary
Time seemed to slow to a crawl as Jupiter was treated to the full, unequivocal sight of the massive jade dragon shooting out of the tunnel and right at Sunrise and Nan.
A yell of warning bubbled up in his throat, but there was nothing he could do. Too far away, too behind glass, not loud enough, any of those reasons were reason enough to stand right there and watch, but Jupiter had never been able to master that skill.
He made a mad dash for the door, throwing it open and emerging out into the stands just in time to watch the jade dragon sink it’s teeth into Sunrise’s side and tug.
Sunrise roared in pain, but that was nothing compared to Nan’s piercing scream as her leg was wrenched from her body.

Jupiter strode through the League of Explorers Headquarters, smiling and greeting people as he went. He didn’t bother carrying anything to disguise his intentions, but he made the effort to fix his face into something less… obvious. Less telling of the feelings that were roiling inside.
He shoved through the door to Colonel Burns’ office, uncaring of the fact that she may have been in a meeting, and shut the door behind him before dropping the friendly pretence.
