Summary
He doesn’t know how deep he’s in when he feels a rapping against the wood of the table, and when he looks up wearily, vision smudged with wine, he finds teal that aches.
His heart drops into his throat. All the fight leaves his body.
“Hey, soulmate,” Kaveh says, and then he blacks out.
Following Nahida's reinstatement, the people of Sumeru are given soulmarks.

Summary
“I got us something”, Charles answers and pulls a box from the bag he’s been carrying, black and unwieldy, adorned in white scribbles. He’s holding it out like it’s something precious, which Edwin highly doubts it is, considering the look Charles gives him. “Something really really cool.”
Edwin takes a moment to look at the box, the poor quality of the cardboard and the horrible picture of teenagers that are trying to look frightened, and yes, some eye rolling will definitely be necessary here.
“Why on Earth would we need a Ouija board, Charles?”
The grin on Charles’ lips would be obnoxious if Edwin didn’t like him so much.
“To talk to ghosts, of course.”Charles gets them a Ouija board and sometimes, it's easier to talk about feelings when you don't have to say the words out-loud.

Summary
"Do you think I'm fit?"
The question nearly makes Edwin drop the very important artifact he had been cautiously transporting back into its proper place on the shelf, and he is, not for the first time, appreciative of the way his ghostly form does not allow such an indignity as a blush.
"What on earth has possessed you to ask me such a question, Charles? Especially when I am busy?"
Charles, at least, looks mildly sheepish.
"Well, it's just, I've been thinkin’ about it, haven't I?”
“Oh, have you?” Edwin says dryly.

Summary
Edwin's smile, when it's a proper one rather than a reserved, temporary upturn of the lips, is the most miraculous thing in the world--as splendid and pearly as a moonrise, but a thousand times rarer.
He wears one of these proper smiles after his sentence to Hell is officially overturned, after he and Charles have embraced in the joyous realization that they're finally, finally free. And as they break apart and something seizes in Charles' chest--surely not his heart--he realizes that, until right this moment, he's never known an Edwin Payne who wasn't on the run. And an Edwin without something twisted and sinister perpetually snapping at his heels is an Edwin who, among other things, smiles freely and openly.
Charles finds himself longing to see it again.

“Fine, yes. I do think about it. Doing…that.”

Summary
“One of those Rtawahist scholars that’s always floating about.” Kaveh points in the direction of the front door. “They saw me just outside here.”
“So?”
“What if they figure out that I’m–” He chokes slightly before clearing his throat. “–living here?”
“I don’t see how that’s a problem.” Alhaitham leaves out the fact that everyone probably already knows, considering Kaveh announced it himself to a large crowd of scholars in the tavern last week.
“I need you to…” Kaveh winces as he pinches the bridge of his nose. “I need you to leave a mark on me. On my neck, ideally, so people can see it.”
“Excuse me?”
Kaveh doesn’t want anyone to figure out that he’s living with Alhaitham, so he comes up with an alternative story as to why he’s always seen outside his door.

Summary
A night in Port Townsend, after Hell, Charles and Edwin talk.
“You really didn’t remember what you look like?” Charles asked.
“I fear I’ve already forgotten again," Edwin said.
The admission didn’t sound sad, just factual. So Edwin was being very Edwin about this. It was only natural, then, that Charles became very Charles about it all.
“You have a very straight nose,” Charles said. “And, um, a sort of soft jawline—strong chin, though. Thick brows, and high cheekbones. Your hair is brown, and your eyes are green. You get a little crinkle between your eyebrows whenever you’re doing practically anything.” Charles demonstrated by glowering playfully in Edwin’s direction. “Thinking, reading, telling me off.”

Summary
Far is a new term for them. They didn’t really have too far, before, which Charles supposes is because he assumed they were already as far as they could go. He’d given up his own personal forever for Edwin, back when he only knew him as the lonely spirit who’d said he wasn’t good with people, even after he’d spent an entire night comforting a complete stranger.
They’d talked about it, after.
I had forever, Edwin had told him, smiling ruefully. You only had a few hours. What is that compared with an eternity?
I want that eternity, Charles hadn’t said. Those “few hours” convinced me to sacrifice a lot, Charles hadn’t said. Thirty years convinced me to sacrifice everything, Charles hadn’t said. Everything but being with you.

Summary
Somehow, they end up like this, Kaveh’s shirt half off and Al-Haitham’s own shirt hastily unbuttoned, and now they’re both just staring at each other in the mortifying emptiness of Al-Haitham’s apartment.
“This isn’t supposed to be happening,” Kaveh says, chest heaving. “You go against everything I stand for.”
Al-Haitham scoffs. “Oh, get over yourself, it’s a school club.”
“Fuck you too,” Kaveh hisses, and then he kisses him.
In which two enemies (Al-Haitham and Kaveh) despite their bitter rivalry (opposing college club loyalties) come together in spite of their differences. (They hook up. Occasionally. Like Kaveh said, it wasn't supposed to happen.)
Al-Haitham just wants to get to know Kaveh. Enough of this rivalry bullshit.
