Summary
After another unsuccessful attempt to join the Cohort due to a case of the mumps, Isaac Tettares is invited to Canaan House with his cavalier under the watchful eyes of their Fifth House mentors to attempt to achieve Lyctorhood. Without clear instructions on how to do that, the pair plan to use the time wisely by studying with the best of what the Nine Houses have to offer to prepare for next year's recruitment period (in case Lyctorhood doesn't pan out). And, of course, get a good look around the spooky, abandoned, possibly haunted castle they're in, if they can sneak away from their guardian's watch.
Including: two children desperate to prove they aren't just children, goth kids losing their minds at the two bone nuns who might be the coolest people to ever live, Pent/Quinn parenting, and are they even awful codependent goths best friends intended to spend their lives together since birth if they aren't a little in love in an embarrassing teen way? (Or, missing scenes from Canaan House, with a Twist)

You and Hollander are in love, want to get married, spend the rest of your lives playing hockey together.” When Ilya didn’t immediately reply to that very accurate statement, Hunter continued: “If you two are in love, I’m straight. That’s how likely that is.” He had laughed and skated away, though Ilya really hadn’t understood what was supposed to be funny about that.

Ilya shrugs. He is hurting, actually. The adrenaline from the win wore off somewhere between his texts with Shane and the medic’s second consult. His face feels swollen and it hurts to speak when he says, “I am not wilting daisy, Hollander. I can handle getting hit at hockey game.”
“Well, I’m glad you’re okay.”
A strange pang hits Ilya’s chest then, unassuming and small. Ilya chooses to think nothing of it.
