the first part of my mcu rewrite - vignette style, starting with age of ultron and continuing on.
“Stick around tomorrow and you’ll find out,” she smirked. There was a pause before the smirk slid from her face and she glanced around them down the hallway before whispering, “Honestly? I want you guys around to watch my back, just in case something goes wrong.”
or; the lies we tell to keep others safe. steve just wants his friends, bruce just wants some semblance of normalcy , and natasha... well, natasha always does her job.

Summary
It’s not because of Hollander.
He and Sveta started talking about it the summer before Ilya left for America. In between rounds of shots, handsfree at the bar, or tipped into each other’s mouth. And then in America, in between women and men, in between sheets. Svetlana shouts outfit ideas into his ear over a brain-melting baseline in New York — matching pink stripes, clogs, him in the dress and her in the suit, Admirals jerseys — until he’s laughing vodka out his nose. He sends her increasingly ugly engagement ring pictures while he’s waiting in the airport and threatens to buy her all of them.
Then Marly shows him the photos with Rose Landry, and like everything else in Ilya’s small, pathetic life, Hollander’s there in it. Wormed right into the centre.
Or: By the time Shane's broken up with Rose, Ilya's already married Svetlana.

Summary
Refusing to let Ilya ruin his career by signing with Ottawa, Shane chooses to really give their relationship a try and moves to Boston to live with Ilya and become a Raider. What follows is enough public scrutiny and backlash from his team that it has him questioning if he made the right decision. Until moments with Ilya and the Raiders show him exactly why he chose correctly.

Hayden’s eyes flickered to Shane as he sat on the bench, chewing on the edge of his mouth guard.
“Don’t fucking look at him,” Ilya insisted as he bent down for the faceoff.
“Excuse me?” Hayden mumbled, eyes darting back to him.
“You heard me,” he retorted, his tone clipped. “He’s not your teammate anymore; he’s mine. If you think Marlow is a problem to your game, wait until you see what I will do to your team if you hurt anyone on mine again.”
Hayden scoffed, dipping his head as he tried to focus on the game. Something about Ilya’s words still rang through his head though, sounding so definitive that he didn’t want to risk seeing what he was actually referring to when he said that.
The puck dropped again, and Ilya stole it before he could comprehend how quickly it happened.
