Part of Cressida wanted to ruin Penelope’s dress. Here was Penelope, fellow third year debutante, who found it in her to harness inner reserves to reflect such beauty when it mattered most. Even the Queen herself leaned over the railing to watch her, before losing interest as she often did. Cressida had never once garnered such attention, had never been a diamond in earnest. Cressida could certainly stand out in a crowd, but it was often for the wrong reasons. She was tired of being the wrong reason.

This was most certainly her last run at the marriage mart. Her mother was already embarrassed enough that she had to be chaperoned for a third year—four was unthinkable. Four was denial’s version of spinsterhood. Although it had not been so baldly stated, Cressida suspected the plan—if she could not find a husband this season—was for her father to make an arrangement with one of his business associates.
