Summary
It starts like this: Steve, waiting in his car to pick up Dustin and friends from a session of their Chutes and Ladders club or whatever. Waiting kind of impatiently, to be honest, even though it’s not like he has anywhere else to be because Robin’s busy tonight and, as he well knows by this point, saving the world doesn’t get you a girlfriend or glory or even a second age-appropriate friend, it just gets you another evening shift at Family Video and a long personal to-do list.
In the spring and summer of 1986, Steve Harrington contends with the biases of the day, hatches several plans, and finally really gets to know Eddie Munson.

“Nice to meet you, Eddie,” said Nick. “It’s rare that I find someone else here who shares my interests.”
“Interests?” He remembered he was wearing his battle vest, Nick’s hand lingering right in the middle of the giant Dio patch. “Oh, you like the heavy stuff too?”
“I really do.”
“Fuck yeah,” Eddie said before he could stop himself. His face got hot. Shit, that sounded way too eager, a totally excessive level of enthusiasm just for meeting another gay metalhead. He had given himself away as a clueless virgin, and Nick was going to stop smiling, walk away, and find someone with the ability to maintain his cool for the length of half a conversation.
But Nick didn’t stop smiling. Instead he said, “I know you just got a drink, but do you want to get out of here?”
Or: After his near-death experience, Eddie decides it's time to get rid of his pesky virginity and heads to a gay bar. It leads to some... realizations... for both him and Steve.

Steve comes to clean his depression mess for him, refusing to take no as an answer. When he makes a joke about a maid costume, Eddie’s head becomes a mess. What happens next wasn’t exactly in Eddie’s original fantasy, but he’s not complaining.

“He’s gotta get a job somewhere, Tommy,” Carol says, rolling her eyes. “Even if it is playing nanny for some creepy old man and his creepy kids in their creepy old mansion out in the middle of the creepy old countryside.”
“Oh my god,” Steve says, snapping his suitcase shut. “I’m gonna be fine. Edward Munson is a rich bastard who is looking for an ‘au pair’ for his seven kids. He’s just gonna be some rich old asshole who wants someone else to parent his kids for him.”
“You mean like daddy dearest, but with more children?” Carol snickers.
Steve flips her off even though he agrees. “Exactly like daddy dearest,” he says, “Which is why I’ll be great at this."

"He had intended on a normal drive, really, just cruising at the speed limit to clear his head. But upon passing the last house on the stretch for miles, the long, empty road looks suggestive. Maybe even a little seductive. A bad itch builds from the base of his spine. Swallowing nothing, he presses the gas pedal slowly, eyes continuously flicking down to the speedometer as it climbs exponentially. The drone of the engine changes with it, getting louder, pitch keening, synchronizing with the blood that churns and rushes in and out through his heart, veins, brain.
The needle hovers just over 100mph for approximately one minute and fourteen seconds."

“The fuck?!” Steve squawks, but he’s laughing, and leaning back against the car a little bit as he hitches Eddie higher, bites playfully at Eddie’s chest before letting him go with one hand, the other shifting up to Eddie’s waist as he slides Eddie down the front of his body. It’s a little awkward with Eddie’s backpack preventing Steve from getting a good grip, but all it serves to do is lever their bodies even closer as Steve finds Eddie’s mouth on his way down, kisses him with a laugh as Eddie’s feet finally make contact with solid ground. “What the hell was that, spider monkey?”
“Gotta keep you on your toes, Stevie,” Eddie says, his thumbs finding his backpack straps as he beams up at Steve.
Or: Eddie flies to Cancun, forgets to use the bathroom, and ends the day needing more than one shower!

“So,” Wayne finally says and looks between them. He gestures his can from Steve to Eddie and back. “Still just friends, huh?” He deadpans.
Steve chokes on his sip of beer, and a grin cracks across Eddie’s face.
“To the general public of Hawkins, sure,” Eddie responds smoothly, hand absentmindedly rubbing Steve’s back as he recovers.
Wayne narrows his eyes at him. “I ain’t the general public of Hawkins, now, am I?”
Eddie shakes his head. “No, I suppose not.”
When he doesn’t elaborate any further, Wayne lifts his eyebrows expectantly. Out with it, boy they say. He barely refrains from waving his hand in a go on then motion.
“Steve and I… we’re, uh,” Eddie’s smile turns soft around the edges, and his hand goes to Steve’s beside him, drawing it into his lap and lacing their fingers together, “we’re going steady now.”
Or, Wayne finds out that Eddie and Steve are EddieandSteve.
