Okay, well, it is. It’s half the sound—a sort of horrid, choked squeak—and half Kaveh’s reaction to it, which is a startled yelp and a flinch so bad that Kaveh’s nose ends up crashing into his forehead.
“Ow?” Alhaitham steps back, rubbing his forehead, and he sees Kaveh whip around in the direction of the squeak. “What—”
“Turtle!”
Kaveh and Alhaitham adopt some turtles, with Tighnari’s help.

Peering into the mirror, Alhaitham found a pair of wide tourmaline eyes staring back at him - pools of aquamarine dotted red and gold at the slits, just like his original human pupils. And his body, a gradient of soft greys and whites, had been decorated with intricate black spots all throughout. Reminiscent of a snow leopard or a silver rishboland tiger, the speckles ran all the way down his sides to his hind legs, and inky, elegant lines curled around his face as if kohl had been painted into his very fur.
Alhaitham, by some curse or some miracle, had been turned into a cat.

Okay, this is a lie. He knew he'd be walking into a trap, but what kind of trap could possibly involve Dr. Ratio? Ratio, who they decided to cast as his alpha. Because of course. Since when did the dimwits from marketing make sensible choices?
Ratio doesn't do passion. His fan club may disagree, but there is no romantic bone in his body. The thought of him in such a sensual role is so absurd that Aventurine never entertained the idea, not even in heat. And he should know; he's tried.
So when the cameras start rolling and something actually shifts, he is unable to react in time. The studio lights burn, but not as much as Ratio's gaze when it lingers a moment too long. And what should have been a fake bite becomes real teeth sinking deep into his skin, forming a bond that can never be undone.
…
Just fantastic. Of all the gambles he's taken, this is the one that might cost him everything. Or grant him the one thing he never dared to bet on.
