Summary
Ryland Grace was Eva Stratt’s first choice for mission science specialist aboard the Hail Mary. He declined, and the astrophage explosion never happened, so Martin DuBois was sent to Tau Ceti. He died in a coma along with Yáo and Ilyukhina. Simon was born on Earth fourteen years after Ryland Grace. Instead of the COI, the latter half of his childhood was marred by the beginnings of the astrophage crisis.
Fourteen years after the launch of the Hail Mary, a beetle returns to Earth. Over a decade earlier than should have been physically possible. The telemetry reveals that all three members of the crew died. So who sent it back, and why? Grace and Simon work alongside a team of scientists to see if the Earth’s Hail Mary pass can still be salvaged.
(Absolutely no knowledge of Iron Lung or Arrival is needed to enjoy this fic - I just borrowed a character from each. This is an AU of Project Hail Mary in a universe I'm calling the "Penpal Verse," for reasons which should become apparent.)

Simon glares viciously at the poor excuse of a knot. It’s not the boot’s fault, he knows that. He’s glaring because he has no other option than the one currently at his disposal, and it’s an option he despises with every piece of his wretched heart. But the sun is climbing higher and he needs to get outside to check on the garden. He grits his teeth and forces the words out.
“Can you…help me with something?”

“Could not do that.” Rocky lowers himself back down, fiddling with the device. “Had theory. Much trial and error. Build long time. Should work.”
“Should – it should work?” Grace sputters. “You haven't tested it?”
“Not without you,” Rocky says, as if that should be obvious.

There's 1 in 70,000 people on the planet who have the gene needed to survive the Hail Mary's expedition. In that limited pool, 1 in maybe 1000 had the necessary skills needed for the mission — more dire still, even less people were willing to volunteer for what is essentially a suicide mission.
When an explosion killed not only their science officers but also their engineers, Eva Stratt makes the tough decision to put 2 people on the spacecraft that no one was expecting to be even be candidates.
One is a middle-school science teacher.
One is a convicted eco terrorist.

Ryland Grace has officially lived on Erid for one whole year. Everything's set up to his liking. He has food, a lab, and his best friend who visits him on the daily.
Sure, he's the only human person here. But given his background, he doesn't mind suffering from touch-deprivation. He's safe right where he is.
Well, not for long. Now, there's a new guy. Who's pragmatic and flat when it comes to any form of expression.
That's fine! Grace can deal with that. He has no worries...
