He woke up choking on air that felt too sharp, too real.
His chest heaved as if his body had forgotten how breathing worked, like it had been pulled apart and stitched back together wrong. The ground beneath him was damp and uneven, cold seeping through his clothes as he gasped, fingers clawing into soil and fallen leaves just to prove he was still there, still alive.
The last thing he remembered was falling. Before everything faded to black.
He remembered being surrounded by sand, the temperature too hot for his body to handle. Now, sound rushed back in all at once. Wind threading through towering trees. Leaves shuddering overhead.

Gruff, no-nonsense, it’s like he’s giving the results of the deliberation of the high council of the Covenant, and not at all like he’s giving his own highly-regarded opinion on some lowly prisoner.
Turntapps keeps Saps in the covenant, Saps learns what he means to Turntapps, and someone from the other island isn't so happy about it.
