The thing is, Bucky Barnes would have waited forever for Steve Rogers. He thinks he could have handled it. If only Steve had just compromised a little. But the thing is, he never did. And Bucky has to finally be strong, because they can't keep going like this. He can't. So he leaves. And now he's just left with memories.

Steve clenches his jaw and goes for the box, unfolding the top flaps to see what’s inside. And what’s inside is…well, it somehow feels like all the oxygen leaves the room as he sees what’s inside. Because it’s his things and clothes and trinkets and memories. Things he left at Bucky’s place. Things he gave Bucky. Things Bucky treasured. Shoved into a box haphazardly.
Steve swallows as he stares at the items in the box, because suddenly this all makes sense and it’s the kind of sense that makes Steve feel a little like he’s dying. “D-did he say anything else?” he asks, voice cracking. “Bucky?” he clarifies. “When he was here?”
“Yes, Captain,” Friday answers. “He said to say goodbye.”

Summary
After the events of the fight between Steve and Tony (and subsequently the rest of the fucking Avengers, for reasons Bucky cannot comprehend other than it’s all his fault, as Tony would say), Bucky winds up in Wakanda to hide and heal, in order to regain some semblance of Bucky Barnes again. No more Winter Soldier, no more HYDRA, just Bucky. And some goats. But even though Bucky feels tranquil in his solitude, he’s not quite alone. He has his thoughts and the gradual faucet drip that is the restoration of his memories from a lifetime before becoming the Winter Soldier.
OR, Bucky is depressed as fuck and knows he misses Steve, but needs to figure out WHY, and when he does, he isn’t really sure how to proceed. Until, of course, Golden Boy Steve Rogers facilitates a plan of his own to reunite the star-crossed lovers. What do 365 days of celebrating life, the world, love, and family look like for Bucky and Steve, and the rest of the crew? We'll see, one month at a time.
