Every day starts like this. The end and the beginning are blurred together. You step into the lift and halfway up you inhale, hairline fracture splitting open and engulfing you - and you are coming back down again. Time has passed and you haven’t lived it.
You live in this office, aware that there is a version of you that lives upstairs, outside, in the beyond. You don’t know this other version of yourself, you don’t know what happens in all those hours in between your existence. There is only Here and the Work that you do.

The heat of his gaze warmed something up inside you. Like learning a new word, letting it lick around your teeth and curl in the soft gum under your tongue. This must be how blood transfusion felt, the flood and spread of something new, the invigoration of it. Fresh blood, flushing out the old.
“I’m sure I can find some places, there’s a lovely library just down the street from here,” you murmured, turning your head away to catch your breath but he was still watching you when you turned back. You gave him your name, asked him what he was doing here.
“I’m John Price, ma’am,” he told you, kissing the back of your hand. Lips against fabric, but you could feel the bristle of his beard as it pierced through to reach your skin. “And I’m here to hunt.”

Summary
“I believe I asked you to call me Kyle, once,” he says, giving you an amused smile.
You don’t frown but it’s a close thing. “I don’t think that would be - appropriate,” you manage. The same response you had given him back then as well, you think.
He frowns instead, and you feel guilt curdle like lukewarm tea in your belly. You shuffle, taking note of how he leans back. You want him back in your space, want the heat of his attention.
“I’m sorry,” you add, desperate for him to not look sad again. You think about his face, searching in the dark of your stairway. It’s impossible to reconcile that he had proposed to spend his life with you. And you cannot even extend the kindness of his name towards him. “Kyle,” you add, before you can stop yourself.

Varang has taken to watching you. A lot.
It feels… challenging. Or appraising, maybe.
You avoid her to the best of your ability. You can’t look at her without thinking of the way she and Quaritch have gotten so much closer recently. They spend most of the day together; ostensibly talking strategy, but you see the way their touches linger. Even the way they look at each other like they’re the only two people in the world, as though everything else is just background noise.
But as the days pass, you realise something. When she’s not watching Quaritch with those bright, lamp-like eyes, she’s watching you.
