Summary
On the 22nd day of the final calendar month in the year 1488, a silent child is born.
A mother holds her soft-skinned newborn with calloused hands. A father presses a simple kiss to a small head. A sister curls her fingers around the gentlest hand she's ever held.
They know him as a baby and a brother.
But as his voice warbles out for a siren's first choral cry, they do not hear the melodious babble they expect—instead, what rises from his tiny, tender chest is, as the Elders later tell them, the piercing cry of war.
How lucky this unremarkable family is, the Elders muse, to be the first to hearken the moon's holy son.
OR: Gillion is a siren rather than a triton. In some respects, this changes very little. In other ways, it changes everything.

Summary
Sometimes, Reuben settles a hand low and still against the nape of his neck or his barely-there bicep and stays there, soft and steady despite being so used to bashing in the jaws of the street kids that mess with them or sneaking into the pockets of a wealthy man's thick winter coat.
Right now, wrapped up in the kind of way his brother can get sometimes, Chip doesn't dare to make him bear anything else.
But, to his shock, Reuben cranes his hands down to Chip's shoulders, so warm against the winter freeze they'd tried to burn away with alcohol, squeezing his bony, thin fingers deep into his flesh—there are bruises there that haven't quite faded, and it hurts when Reuben presses, hurts worse when the jagged ends of Reuben's nails chew in too, but Chip doesn't say a thing about it.
OR: Four years after they meet and four years before Chip gets away, he and his older brother share a drink and smoke on their moldering couch. He finds himself wondering just how human Reuben thinks he is.

Summary
Karkat Vantas is your everyday work-from-home twenty-something. As a phone support agent, he makes money by placating entitled weirdos. It's a long, boring, and terrible job for someone with a history of anger issues, and it's about to be made even worse by some insufferable dumbass wannabe parkour stuntman crashing through his prized parsley. Because of course that happens. Of course the universe decides that it is National Shit on Karkat Day, as it is every other day of the year.

Summary
Space travel is hard enough without factoring in what evils lurk between the stars. Leading a ship is hard enough without everything starting to go wrong.
And why do the lights keep flickering in electrical?
Pretty sus, right?
