Summary
It all ran together. Maybe it had been running together for a long time. He kind of lost track of it after a while; he had a little tablet in his room that would show him a calendar, some news, the weather. He didn't even look at the calendar, though. Calendars were for people who had something to expect, some event in their future to look forward to. Either he'd forgotten what that was like, or he'd never known in the first place.
There had been a moment, in the water with Steve -- the first time or the second, he wasn't sure -- where his wet gear and Steve's dead weight had dragged them both down. They had rested together in the swirling silt at the bottom of the river, and Bucky had looked up through the water and the falling debris and seen the hazy light of the sky shining through.
It had been strange. Everything happening around them, but this moment of silence and stillness. Sometimes the feeling Bucky had now reminded him of that.

Summary
Lily remembered her sister, how there had been a time she was curious and delighted about magic, before it slowly sank in that she could look and not touch.
The last thing Petunia had said to Lily before she died was a chilly goodbye, ending a holiday dinner where they'd had a shrieking row in the entryway. Petunia had said 'freak' and Lily had hissed 'better than this, better than this being my whole fucking world, Tune, do you even see yourself, are you happy--'
And now here was Dudley Vernon Dursley fussing himself to sleep as Lily walked the halls of the Godric's Hollow house. His tiny soft hands with their tiny soft fingernails curled under her chin, the same way Harry's always had.
She passed James, who was gently bouncing his way up the hall the opposite way. "I think he's asleep," James mouthed over Harry's tousled head. His hair was the same mess, his head bent down as he peered at his sleeping son.
Lily stopped where she stood, her nephew heavy on her chest, her husband smiling, her sister buried. "James," she said. "How are we going to do this?"

And Lily heard her sister whisper you got everything.
A breeze blew down, through the castle, over the grass, out across the Lake and past the four figures sitting at its shore.
Maybe I did, thought Lily, because she could still feel James's arm warm around her, could hear Dudley breathing and Harry picking strands of grass to fiddle with. But I won't apologize for it. Not to you.
You're dead, Petunia, and he's here. He needs a mother and you're not here. I am. I will be here for them, as long as I can.
Did you hate magic for all the reasons you said, Tune? Because it was weird and gross and ugly and freakish. Or did you hate it because you couldn't touch it? Because if you had let yourself love it, you'd have hurt forever.
You were bitter and angry and I missed you so much. Why couldn't you listen? Why didn't you try-- try harder? Didn't you love me enough not to hate me? Why did you lock this all away, and was it enough, what you had left? Were you happy-- He's happy, Tune.
Lily opened her eyes. There was light on the water, and ripples from a quiet wind, and her heart was aching. Her hands were warm, and held.
I gave him everything I could. Your son. He will always be yours, Tuney, but he has grown in my house. And maybe it wasn't enough, what we tried to do, what we tried to be, but we love him, and he loves us, Tuney.
I didn't steal anything from you. I gave it. I would've given you everything I had, if you had just let me. I gave him everything I had. That is what you do, when a little boy comes into your life with nothing but himself. You give him a home.
I didn't steal anything. He gave it, because he's got a heart big enough to level mountains. I like to think you would've known that, if you'd lived, if you'd known him. This isn't a fight, it's a family.
What would you think of me, now, Tune? What would you have done, if it was my son?

“I think you like being with me because you like being alone,” Eames said once, pushing Arthur against his sheets as they moved together to the bass of some car speeding along Clinton Street, ten stories below.
Eames started guessing in Mar del Plata, beginning with “because I’m so devilishly handsome,” of course, and on through “because of the accent” in Prague, “because of the job” in Hanoi, “because it’s easier than saying no” in Amsterdam, “because you like that there’s no answer, because you like torturing yourself with hypothetical possibilities” in Oran, and then, in Novgorod, just before the Fischer job, “it’s because you like knowing there’s still something you can’t do fucking perfectly, isn’t it, something you can’t control?”and Arthur buried his face against Eames’s neck and just breathed. Eames doesn’t ask again after that.

“This is Lucky,” Clint said when a dog got between him and Natasha. Lucky’s vest was bright, like desert mornings and night explosions.
“Does he help?” Natasha asked.
Clint pressed his hands flat on the counter behind him. “He saved my life.”
Natasha looked at Steve, her expression fierce. Steve resisted the urge to yank down his sleeves. Instead, he dug his nails into the puckered skin on his forearms.

Notes: About a year ago, lorcleis, gigi256, sagemb (my wonderful, glorious, beautiful beta), and myself were hunkered down in a group chat on Skype tossing around fic ideas, and at one point, I said, "Have I shared my headcanon that Randall isn't Viktoria's father," to which sagemb replied, "I just had the most awful thought," and because the rest of us were dumb enough to ask her to share, she then said, "[what if] Abe is Vika's father," so here we are, thirteen months later.
Shoutout to my beta for prompting this, editing it, and then crying over it with me.
This might make you cry, too.

Bookmarker's Notes
I CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVEN'T BOOKMARKED THIS ONE YET
--
He turns to Cobb, but Cobb is still watching Phillipa, the tripping gait of his six-year-old daughter running back to her friends. He's smiling-- Cobb is smiling, and Arthur thought he'd forgotten how to, at least in that particular way, that softens the corners of his eyes and the stubborn set of his jaw. Cobb watches his daughter in the late afternoon California sun, looking ridiculous in his clown makeup, Kool-Aid powder on the front of his shirt, and Arthur thinks-- Cobb looks, thinks Arthur, he looks happy.
Two years they spent on the run. Arthur remembers that first phone call, Cobb's voice on the other end, Arthur, something's happened. How they were in Vladivostok for James's third birthday, and Cobb kept repeating, I can't forget it, like a mantra, I can't forget it, until he lost track of the time difference and forgot it. Cobb drank until he stumbled to the bathroom and threw up for hours, James's present trampled underfoot, and Arthur remembers trying to coax the box back into shape before mailing it to Paris for Miles.
Arthur remembers Cobb on the phone with his mother-in-law, shouting It's her birthday, can't I tell her happy birthday, I'm her father. He remembers Cobb on that first anniversary, and Arthur thought that Cobb had forgotten, that he was keeping himself too busy to keep the dates straight, until he called him and Cobb wouldn't pick up, falling into one bar after another for sixteen hours, until Arthur found him huddled in an alleyway behind a restaurant, holding his hand up to the streetlight, watching the glow of his wedding ring.
And Arthur remembers when she showed up for the first time, when Mal appeared in Cobb's dreams, and they woke up gasping for breath, trying to keep the mark under for long enough for them to make an escape. Arthur asked, What the fuck was that, Cobb, what was she doing there, and didn't let him put the keys in the ignition until he answered, and Cobb looked at him and said, That was Mal-- god, Mal was there, I thought I'd never see her again-- and Arthur was disgusted by the excitement in Cobb's eyes, the thrill of hope, and he punched him hard enough for his head to crack against the window of the driver's seat.
After all of that, thinks Arthur, after two fucking years, Cobb looks happy.
And that's exactly it. That's what he's been waiting to learn how to say aloud. That after two years on the run, after losing someone like Mal, after fighting the whole world on your own-- you could still have something left to smile about. That a life in pieces is still something to come back to, still something to build a home out of.
Why he couldn't regret the two years he spent mopping up after Cobb, why after all those broken bones and red-eye flights, he still found himself defending him. It's not a sense of duty, he thinks, nothing to do with being his point.
It's because Arthur had known -- without knowing, in the instinctual and familiar way that you gravitate toward the truth without ever learning how to put it into words, building yourself around it like a grapevine winding around a trellis -- he had known that perfection was never what he expected from the choices he made. It didn't matter that Cobb was no saint, was miles and miles from it, because Arthur had run with him around the world believing that he would still be worth it, asshole that he was, human that he was.
All those shattered kneecaps in exchange for Phillipa, six years old, tilting her face toward Cobb like a sunflower. It doesn't feel a bit like martyrdom.
And so what if Eames says no? thinks Arthur. So what if we fuck it up?
He knows what to do. Eames's answer doesn't matter, because it was never what he was waiting for. It was never the prospect of reciprocity that he fell in love with; he never loved and meant to make a profit from it.
I'll tell him, thinks Arthur. I'll tell him, and maybe I'll let him go.
--
"I love you," says Arthur.
In the distance, their toaster crashes through the window of their living room, scattering shards of glass across the carpet. But with a heavy enough heel and your jaw set to it, you can always grind it down to a handful of grains in the sun, catching the light like confetti.
And maybe that's all broken glass ever is. Confetti in the waiting.
I could do it, they think. I could walk on broken glass for him.

When MI6 decommissioned him, Q sipped his tea, indifferent, and said, "Age has caught up to you at last, I see." In the days following, James was angry and Q was patient until he couldn't be, the words he carefully padded finally unsheathing, cutting into him as precise as a scalpel as they laid truths bare.
"Age catches up to everyone, James," Q said as James sat at the kitchen table, hunched over. "The fact is, you are now obsolete."
"Don't make me out to be one of your toys," James said, knocking back another shot of the truly awful vodka Q kept in the cabinets. "You and your machines."
Taking the bottle from him, Q dumped its meager contents into the sink and said, "You and your humanity."

He must, he thinks--and it’s the last sane thought he will have for some time--be very lonely.
Survival and resistance are tricky things, in the absence of light and sound, but Bond's training was very thorough, and his history of being watched is very handy.

I met him when I was being towed away for scrap and I told him I could pull triggers if he found me things to shoot. If he found me.
I met her because she had all the money and I had all the cards but the ace up my sleeve, which was always hers.
I met her when she drove me to the train, because she was glad to see that I was still alive afterwards, because the water was warm when I fell into it.
I met him when he was still looking at the world over a stack of papers, but he turned out to have steady hands and a clear head.
I met her because I was an orphan. Because the sky fell. Because I kept not dying when I was supposed to.

Summary
The airship was owned by a man wealthy and eccentric enough that he’d changed all records of his name to Q. And now he spent his time flying around the world in an airship of his own design, conducting business and providing a luxurious neutral space where others might do the same.
~
Q moved as though he had his own orbit. Power and influence flowed around him, with a constantly shifting medley of important people making themselves available for conversation in his immediate vicinity, but none of them were so crass as to impose upon his silence. He had the ability to wander alone through a crowded room.
Bond knew how to navigate such social eddies. He placed himself so that when there was a momentary part in the crowd, it was just when the young man happened to look over. Their eyes locked.
Bond lifted his glass to him in a silent toast. Then the crowd shifted, filling the space between them.

After finding missing and inconsistent files, Q finds himself tracking down the secrets and origin of the mysterious agent 007, which is complicated by the fact that he's falling in love.
~
—The last thing the King said to me was, ‘Thou art a true knight. Keep faith. Keep to the code’.
Thou shalt not tell a falsehood: that was the first to go.
Keep the faith: that was next.
Over the years, every part of the code has come into conflict with every other part. Shall I keep my faith or shall I keep from telling falsehoods?
In the end, I had to choose only one tenet that would remain sacred. Because the true question that every knight one day has to face is whether he will keep the code or serve his country.
He lived and died and sleeps in stone by the code. He never doubted, never lied.
He never had to.

Summary
The rules of engagement are different when the manifestation of your soul is capable of walking, talking and interacting with the world. Q and Estelle have always pushed boundaries as the Quartermaster team, while Bond and Bailey have never allowed anything – neither the rules nor the limits of the human-daemon bond – to bind them.
Together, they are a force to be reckoned with, but first, they must get there.
(A Skyfall/His Dark Materials fusion in that this series takes place after the events of Skyfall, with the sole addition that everyone has a daemon. All Craig!Bond canon applies).
