Summary
This isn’t a glitch, it’s a reset, the second chance he knew better than to hope for but hoped for anyway like a fever he couldn’t sweat out. It’s the universe telling him that if he does it right, he’ll pay his debts and then some, because he can keep the story from ending here. He can save the story. And to save the story, he needs to save the hero.

Summary
Q thinks he can't imagine anything worse than three days at a conference with James Bond as his bodyguard. Bond thinks that's showing a lack of imagination. He may be right.
Or, the one where Q has a long-standing arrangement, Bond condescends to croissants and tablecloths, unresolved issues abound, and then actual serious stuff happens. Post-Spectre.

"She had exquisite taste," Arthur says. "And she made me buy a new suit and half a dozen ties because she said the one I had on didn't bring out my eyes enough. I said Mal, they're just brown, and she said…"
"Come drink your coffee, Arthur," Eames says gently.
Obeying because he doesn't know what else to do, Arthur stumbles to the island and seats himself precariously on a barstool. "I don't understand," he says, and manages to find his mouth with his coffee despite lingering disorientation and the shaking of his hands. "Her mazes always had escape routes. There were always ways to cheat them if you knew where to look. Even if you would have sworn there couldn't be any way to get out, she'd find one and afterward you'd think That was so obvious, I should have known to look there. Mal… Mal always knew the way out."
Hot coffee splashes over his hands and all over his counter. Eames is strong and solid behind him, wrapping warm arms around him and whispering Arthur, Arthur, my poor darling into his hair as he cries.

When it came, it was not how Arthur thought it would end. Not with this sweeping change. Not with a powerful Japanese business man who wanted—of all things—a level playing field and a leap of faith. Not with the goal of leaving the seed of an idea rather than taking the fruit ripe on the branch. Not with inception. Eames, he thought, would be pleased as punch with the whole thing. Eames was going to give him so much shit when he showed up. Eames.

Summary
Let the cynics and optimists debate love, he remembered Q saying once, apropos of—not Madeleine, it couldn’t have been Madeleine, that had come too late—some woman Bond had used as a lever against a fulcrum. Let them debate it: the pragmatists would use it, and just as often get fucked over by it.
(Post-Spectre. Bond returns to London, but it's been seven years, and nothing he's left behind has stayed still in his absence.)

I'm not a huge fan of SPECTRE fix-its because they tend to villainize Madeleine Swann, which, like, no... but yeah, this is brilliant and it hurts but IN A GOOD WAY.

“Décor hasn’t changed much,” he said after a pause.“We still have a monarchy.” She nodded towards the stuffed Corgi in his hand. “You should know we’re not in the business of tossing the functional, even the ceremonial, so long as it still works.”
“Have you met her?”
“I have. I can’t say we talked much, but there it is. I got the shakes afterwards, believe it or not. Not to be crass, but I’m glad to have gotten it in before the inevitable occurred—I can’t say I would have been as keen on meeting Charles.” She stopped at an immense walnut desk outside of a closed door. “Did you ever get the chance?”
“They don’t introduce those of us on the ground. Alpha before numerical.” And in any case, Bond had had his Queen, and served her, and she had never been Elizabeth.
--
“It’s more art than science. It’s no good thoroughly traumatizing them before the paint’s even dry, after all, but there’s a number of things you’re allowed to do, within reason. They don’t really break, of course, not properly, because they know it’s a construct. You just assess when you think they would, given what you’re allowed to work with.”Q touched a finger to the stem of his glass. “I wonder why I never went through it. I see as much as you’ve ever seen. More, probably. What score would I—”
Bond closed his eyes. He didn’t like what he found behind them. Don’t make me think of that, he wanted to say, but he’d already thought it. It was like a reflex, no different from kicking out his foot at a hard tap on his knee. He knew exactly what he would do to break Q. Hands first, then eyes, and head as a last resort—the final crack of the nut. Put Q in a chair designed to separate him from his ability to string together words and numbers and one could have everything for the asking.

Summary
Arthur wakes up and realizes the last ten years of his life have been a dream. He is nineteen, and he can barely remember where he is. What he can remember is the ghost of Eames’ hands pressed down on his chest trying frantically to stop the blood flooding up around his fingers as Arthur died (as he woke up).

Q went on with his usual efficiency and deadpan snark, and nothing changed.
Except:
Sometimes he would look up to say something, only to abruptly catch himself and rub at the engraved Q on his cane.
Q never went home before two in the morning anymore, not even when M, Moneypenny and/or Rid intervened.
Q-Branch kept quiet about how one of their quartermaster’s side projects was attempting to track down a certain missing (presumed dead) agent. M knew about it but didn’t say a word.
When Q met the new 007, he asked Tess to take over for a bit and sort out the new agent while he had a smoke on the rooftop. Q had never smoked in his life.
Q didn’t smile or laugh anymore.
But otherwise, life went on. -

Mal told me once, when we were possibly on the wrong side of too many glasses of wine in Cannes, that she hoped that you and I would get married in her lifetime. I think what I’m feeling right now (and it’s hard to tell, I’m going to regret this postcard in the morning as much as I’m going to regret the vodka straight from the bottle) is regret.
--
Eames drifts awake because there’s sunlight spilling across the bed and into his face. Slow strains of Edith Piaf (“Hymne A L'amour”, he realizes sleepily, and it’s the original, not some crap cover) are floating through the windows, from the café on the ground floor. When Cobb had asked Eames once where Arthur had come up with the idea for Piaf as the kick, he’d said he had no clue, although in reality he knows exactly why, and it’s the same music he would have picked, too. They’ve woken up with the open windows and the sound of Paris, especially that little café and their old sound system, so many times that it just seems natural that if you’re going to wake up, she might as well be the one telling you to. (Although Eames has never really wanted to examine why Arthur had picked “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien”.)

The first time Bond flirted with Q, it was purely out of self-defense.
The second time Bond flirted with Q was largely manipulation.
The third time Bond flirted with Q, he just wanted to feel something.
The fourth time Bond flirted with Q was out of sheer boredom.Somehow, flirting with Q became something of a habit for Bond.
And then, it became something else.

“And he died.” Bond didn’t even have to make it a question.
“Of course he died.” Q’s voice was strangely gentle, as if all the old bitterness had calcified into quiet resignation. “That’s what field agents do, isn’t it?”
Q’s voice echoed in Bond’s memory.
You’re dead, you don’t care. We’re the ones left behind.

You think: My father wanted me to be my own man.
And you know, you know, you know that isn't true. The only man your father ever wanted you to be was him, and you never quite measured up, you never did it right. But it occurs to you, filling out your immigration form, that your father is dead.
Your father is dead.
The kind of man he wanted you to be might be immaterial.

Prompt: What about Lupin? Lupin, who lost everything the night James and Lily died, who forgave Sirius, who died in battle?
--
When they told him the news about Lily and James, Lupin finished the mission he was on before he went to Godric’s Hollow. He stood in front of the Potters’ ruined home and fell apart in the cold streets. He picked the pieces up, slowly, over years and years. In the first half hour, he remembered how to breathe. He picked up his composure sometime the next week. He patched together nights of sleep. Sometimes the stitching couldn’t hold; sometimes he couldn’t pull himself out of bed in the morning.
Remus kept picking himself up and patching himself together. Today, he walked by a beautiful woman with long red hair and when she laughed he didn’t flinch with sorrow. Today, he made a joke, the kind James would have collapsed at and Sirius would have smirked at. Remus patched himself together, scars and sorrows, kindnesses and chocolate.
We are the ways we rebuild ourselves.

Of course, Jack had heard all of the rumors -- the whisperings of a witch who attended Samwell and would give you love advice by reading your palm or tell your fortune with tarot cards or use tea leaves to predict your next test grade if you just asked. He remembered that Ransom often consulted him for the latter option and swore up and down by his methods, but Jack himself had never met him. Until now.
