Summary
For Ambrosius, the Goldenloins' annual charity gala is an assault course of invasive questions, unsolicited opinions, and unwanted conversations.
It'd be easier if Ballister were there. But going home to him is better.
Todd half stumbles into Ambrosius, then rights himself. ‘Can you imagine it, though? I mean, can you even imagine Ballister at some fancy party? Imagine it, right? So hilarious.’
In fact, Ambrosius has spent most of tonight longingly thinking of exactly that. How much better this night would be if he could dance with Bal, could bridge any separation not by thinking of him all the way across the city in his Institute dorm, but with just a shared glance across the room—Aren’t the two of us beyond all this? Don’t you wish we could get out of here? Ten more minutes, and I’m all yours. Could be openly affectionate, hold his hand, kiss his cheek. Could answer journalists honestly: Yes, I am with someone, actually, and I love him very much.

Summary
A few months after everything, Ballister and Ambrosius watch Gloreth's statue come down.
He rubs his thumb over the back of Ambrosius’s hand. ‘It’s all right to feel something about it,’ he reminds him gently.
Ambrosius lets out a soft laugh. ‘A journalist asked me that. Did I tell you? He called and wanted to know how I was feeling ahead of the demolition starting. And I didn’t know how to say that I was feeling terrible, and that I was feeling the best I’d ever felt, and that I wasn't feeling anything at all without sounding like I was losing it.’
Bal bumps his arm lightly against Ambrosius’s. ‘I don’t think you’re losing it.’
‘Well, you’ve always understood me a little bit better than the press,’ Ambrosius points out, resting his head on Bal’s shoulder.
